Nursery Decorating/cleaning timing?

Hey all,

We have a small room that is currently used for something else (my unofficial closet:), which will be the baby room.  I don't have huge plans for the transition, but it will need to be painted, furniture assembled, and of course I will need to find a new home for all my clothing.  All of this seems like exhausting physical work, which may just get harder as it gets hotter and I get bigger.

My question is, when are you ladies, if you are, planning on doing the bulk of the baby room/space prepping?  On one hand it seems early to have an unused nursery in an already small house, but on the other hand it seems like something I won't want to/be able to do in like October.  2nd etc... time moms, what was your experience?

  • Mine was all done over Memorial Day weekend. My house is almost 100 years old and doesn't have central air (plus four floors of stairs) so it gets hot running around a lot in the summers at times. I didn't want to deal with that in the middle of the summer/while much larger pregnant so my MIL and FIL came up and helped me clear out the guest bedroom, repaint it, install a new ceiling fixture, shop for everything and put all the furniture together.

I have to say it's a relief knowing that now all I need to do is sew curtains/a bedskirt and hang wall art plus add some personal touches, and I'm pretty thrilled with how it looks.

  • The room we used for the nursery in our old house was already painted a beige color (it was the guest room before)  so it worked either way.  When we moved into our new house this past August, I couldn't stand not having our son's room set up so I painted it the exact same color as it was at the old house and everything has been ready to go since before we even started trying.  With DS we started working on the room in July (my due date was a few weeks after my current due date) and slowly worked on it.  I ended up in PTL but the room was completely ready to go by the time he came home.

I just started seriously browsing for nursery decor, ideas, colors, etc this week. We had our a/s last week. The room we are using as the nursery is just an empty room right now, literally nothing in it- we moved into our house last summer and this room just never got touched. So the first I'm going to do is give it a good scrub/cleaning, then work on taping off everything for painting in the next week or so. Then we will order the crib and nursery furniture. And lastly the bedding and any decor. I might be jumping the gun a little, idk, but I want the nursery done sooner rather than later, when I probably really won't feel like doing anything. I'm due November 1 and my goal is to have the nursery finished by the end of August. Plenty of time Smile
  • Thanks all--very helpful.  I know I will just feel so much better getting it to a point where it will just need finishing touches in Fall.  Now I just have to convince my DH that I am not being nuts wanting to get it done so early :)
