Nipple flow for BM bottles?

Just reading the thread below on eating schedule - for those who are nursing and giving bottles of expressed BM, what flow nipple do you use?

Re: Nipple flow for BM bottles?

  • grrrump.. I HATE this.

So we were on level 1 ventaire nipples (all nipples / brands seem to "flow" differently fyi) - and daycare started asking for level 2s because she was taking 20 mins to finish her bottle.  DH verified yes she is taking that long - and supply seemed ok - so we upped her speed.  Sure enough around that time she started getting impatient with my flow when home and chicken / egg my supply dropped.  I'm not SURE it was the bottles or if it would have happened either way but we are now eping during the day and nursing before bed, MOTN and first thing in the morning because otherwise she's up all night eating because she doesn't get enough during the day.  I hear this is very common with or without the bottle flow because babies get active and dont' want to hang out and nurse all day.  So again I can't confirm it was the nipple flow - but it all happened around the same time..

  • Medium Flows I think. She was taking for-ev-ar to finish her bottles at DC and the DCP asked if we could move them up. I don't want to give her any faster because I am paranoid she will want the bottle over the boob.

  • Fast. It's pretty much all she's ever taken. She hates bottles. Always has. The playtex drop in latex fast flow is the only bottle she's ever taken. I'm not worried about her taking the easy way out and preferring the fast nipple.

In hindsight, it's going to be nice when we wean off bottles. She's not going to care, but the bottle strikes were rough when I first went back to work.

  • Hmph hmph hpmh. She hates bottles as well - she barely eats all day at daycare, and she's up twice at night eating. But I've also heard doom and gloom about switching nipple flow and her refusing the boob. I would hate to pump on weekends. Hate.

I still don't know what to do. Blarg.

  • She's on fast. She (when she was not teething) started refusing bottles because the nipple was collapsing. I switched it to the fastest flow, and she hasn't had a problem since.

Our LOs are also old enough that I wouldn't worry about starting a bottle preference at this age... but that's just me.

  • I always thought you were supposed to go with slow flow, so it was more like nursing. Kate takes about 15 min. to finish a bottle, that is also about how long she takes to nurse.

edit: You daughter is freakin adorable!

  • I would say if she rejects bottles you probably are ok to introduce a faster flow.. maybe if she gets two bottles up the flow on one and not the other and see how she nurses?

That said - I know at least one kid in my daycare just hates bottles and it doesn't matter what they do - she just hates them.

at this age maybe you could try a sippy cup?

  • We use slow. No complaints from anyone about how long it takes her to finish a bottle, and I don't want her to get frustrated when she's nursing.

My flow is fairly fast. L only nurses for about 7 minutes now. It takes about the same amount of time to finisher her bottles.

  • Slow. DS can still finish a 5oz bottle in about 7 minutes and he doesn't seem frustrated. No plans to change.

  • Level 3.....so fast u suppose
