Thumbs Down, Storytime

Despite (STILL) being hugely pregnant, I dragged myself and DD to the local library storytime today.  We usually stick to parks, playgrounds, or play groups at a local preschool where everything is just free play.

Well, I don't know if she is feeding off of my (very) limited patience, but DD was like a bull in a china shop.  She didn't want to sit, didn't want to hear the story, didn't want to participate in the singing/dancing portion.   She just wanted to yank all the books off the shelves and run out of the storytime area.

At this age, how do your kids do in a class or setting with structure?  Do they follow along, or just kind of do their own thing?

Two of my mom friends were there, and they assured me that it was totally hit or miss if their kids would sit still at DD's age (their kids are 2.5 and 3.5).  They also told me that the lady who conducts the class has somewhat unrealistic expectations for the kids to follow such a rigid structure at this age.  I'm just curious about how everyone else's kiddos do in a setting with structure, or if you mostly stick to activities that are open/free play?  The storytime lady was kind of a bore, anyway, so we probably won't try that again for a while.

  • First, kudos for attempting it!

P is such a go, go, go kid. She never sits still. If she is not asleep, she is on her feet running around. We try to sit down and read to her as much as we can, but she just cant sit still. I could not imagine her in a group setting where she was expected to sit down and listen.

We have a membership to the Children's Museum here. That is way more her thing. She can run around and get into anything she wants.

  • We gave up doing structured activities a few months ago. I even dropped out of music class because he was to crazy! He'd rather run around the room, exploring everything he can get his hands on. If I tried to get him to sit and listen it just made it worse because he thought it was a game.

That sounds like every toddler I've ever seen at story time, including my own! I found 15 months to 21 months or so to be the hardest for that stuff. Totally normal.

    Agreed.

Luckily, our story times are very age segregated.  O's group is called wiggle worms, and the kids are encouraged to act out the story, play with stickers that go with the story, etc.  There's NO WAY he'd sit still for a story.  Hell, he barely sits still for 5 minutes while reading a bedtime story.

  • We did story time once when DD1 was the same age. Once. As in we didn't bother going again. The lady doing it kept giving me the stink eye because my notyet2yearold wouldn't sit still, answer questions, etc. Pfffft!

  • Phew!  Thanks, ladies, I feel much better now.  I was worried my friends were just trying to pacify me about her behavior, glad everyone agrees it's normal!

Like dollface said, DD is just go, go go!  Especially when we're out and about and there are so many new things to explore.  She will sit quietly when we're at home for stories, but when we're out, there's just no keeping her contained.  Which is fine....to me, that's why we go out - so she can learn, explore and burn off energy!

Love the Please Touch Museum idea.  Maybe we'll do a membership for a birthday gift, it will be something we can do regarless of the weather, (unlike the zoo) and provide her with a more age-appropriate setting than the storytime.
