Can I go on the record as saying if your DH picks a gun over you and won't change on this topic, you have bigger problems?
Gun, puppy, pig, WHATEVER. I can't imagine DH or I ever just saying "This is coming into our house and I am not changing so tough".
That's not the conversation at this point. Last night he casually mentioned his plans to do this, and I reacted negatively, and he just totally doesn't understand why. For him, it's all about the logistics (safety, money). He's having a really hard time wrapping his head around the pig (like some other posters in this thread). I seriously doubt he's going to go out and buy this gun if I tell him I'm 100% opposed, but I want him to understand where I'm coming from.
That's where DH and I are. He won't go buy another gun if I tell him I can't live with it, but he sees owning guns as no weirder than owning books. I don't think it's something we will ever see eye-to-eye on.
Hizzo I am no saying say compromise your beliefs so please don't read that in what I am about to write.
We often fear what we don't know. There is a lot of ignorance about guns. That can be seen in this post with the semi automatic junk going on. Would you be willing to learn more about guns and gun safety? I was in your shoes three years ago. I said never and I meant it. Then DH brought up the idea. I was adamantly against it. To be honest I had the same thought you do. I thought only rednecks and bad people owned guns. I told DH he would have to give me time. And space and he did. I researched the crap out of everything gun related. I took a safety course I talked to other gun owners wives. It took me two years but I came around. Like I said I don't even like guns, but DH does. I am 100% comfortable having them in our house with the safety precautions we put in place.

I say this with lots of love. But "more educated professionals owning a gun than not" just is not the norm in these parts. It's the very rare exception of the rule. I have absolutely no doubt it is different in Texas, but her assumption holds true in other parts of the country.
I understand that. But to make such a blanket statement is in itself uneducated and ignorant.
Or it could just mean she doesn't live in Texas or some place else with a pervasive gun culture.
I assume most college educated professionals I know do not keep guns at home. Out of the hundreds of people I know, there are two exceptions to this rule. That's a safe enough assumption for me!
Fair enough. But I am here to tell you something very eye opening therefore you can't make that broad assumption anymore. Lots and lots of professional well educated people own guns in our state. So while I understand the assumption it just does not hold true.
I don't love guns. I am not a gun fanatic and actually personally don't own one. My DH however does. He loves guns and is into them for sport. I totally understand where Hizzo is coming from and think her husband is dead wrong in this case.
There are a lot of professionals that own and regularly use guns in a lot of states. FTR, Hizzo doesn't live in the NE where gun usage is more rare. In the Midwest, a lot of people hunt. I lived in KS for 10 years. It does not surprise me at all that Hizzo's DH grew up around guns.

Yes, but I don't think it's unfair that based on her life experience it hadn't occurred to her that her husband would have no interest in guns. If she had never known an educated professional who was a gun owner there was no reason for her to consider that her husband, who is an educated professional.
And assuming that somone from rural Kansas is into guns is just as bad as assuming an educated professional isn't. I mean, I'm from NJ by way of family from Brooklyn and Long Island and Italian and absolutely not connected to the mafia.
The vast majority of modern firearms are semi automatic. I think if you took a firearms safety course and learned more about them, you could both be on the same page and then you could come up with a mutual decision. By saying that you are uncomfortable with a semi automatic weapon in your house sort of shows your lack of experience with firearms, seriously I'm not meaning to offend. I think if you took a class and learned exactly how firearms work today, you would either be able to better articulate why they aren't something you want, or possibly you will be more comfortable with them.

Also, you can't have it both ways with the stereotypes. If she was suppose to just assume he liked guns because he grew up somewhere they are stereotypically accepted, why couldn't she just assume he had no interest because he not longer fit the stereotypical type?
I mean, I am sure there are some people in rural Kansas who are antigun.
Either we get to make assumptions or we don't.
I see your point. But, just because DH did not have guns when I met him did not make me automatically assume that he was anti-gun. I have never touched a gun and have no desire to do so. Also, I do not see the problem with hunting guns being in a locked gun safe. I have no problem with DH going bird or deer hunting even though he didn't do that when I met him. People change as we age and move. I do not expect DH to act like he did when we got married.

He's suggested this as well. Maybe sometime in the future I would consider this, say, if my boys express an interest in learning to shoot. Right now, though, I'm just not there.

Are you ok if he never does understand where you are coming from? I would say that often with something like this, you probably won't see eye-to-eye and neither of you will fully understand where the other is coming from.
That being said, he definitely has to respect your opinions on this and not get the gun.
As to the PP who said that owning guns was illegal in Canada, that is so far from the truth it's laughable. There are certain types of guns that are prohibited and require special authorization and registration, but anybody can own a gun if they have their gun license (which requires a gun safety course and a couple other courses). Guns are not restricted to just hunting purposes.

The assumption that only uneducated people can own or shoot firearms is what disturbs me. To make a blanket statement is na?ve.
Yes, it is. I'll own that. But naive or not, it's what I thought at the time, I'm not going to lie about it.
Case in point, my dad grew up in rural North Dakota and played with guns like they were toys as a kid. (There's this story about how his brother accidentally shot the dog in the head and the dog got up and walked away like nothing happened.) As an adult, he never owned a firearm or had any interest whatsoever in owning one, and he was always a little disdainful of them.
I know that's completely anecdotal, but it's example of how my perceptions of gun-ownership were shaped.
I see your point. But, just because DH did not have guns when I met him did not make me automatically assume that he was anti-gun. I have never touched a gun and have no desire to do so. I think this is important to remember. It's not that her husband is "suddenly into guns", it's that her husband has experienced a renewed interest in a hobby that he had as a kid. If you were too look at me right now, you wouldn't think I grew up going hunting with my dad and using guns on a fairly regular basis. We just aren't at the point in our lives where hunting and gun ownership is practical. Once I am done the pregnant/young kids thing, having a gun and hunting will be more likely again. People change and develop interests in new things or things they used to like but put aside for a while. It's really not all that odd.

This totally rubs me the wrong way. So you would do it for your boys because you love them and they are important to you, but not your husband? I am not trying to change your mind, but I do believe you owe it to your husband to do some research and get some more information before you totally shut down this idea. I really really get where you are. I have been there. The only different ce was DH did not even grow up around guns so essentially I was blindsided. What do you have to lose but throwing yourself into education about guns?
FTR, to me, semi automatics, handguns and any firearm are all the same to me, in that they will never be allowed in my house. End of story, hill I am willing to die on etc
I made a distinction in my post based on Hizzo's current dilemma, as my stance is not helpful to her problem

No, I would do it because the only way I would be comfortable with my boys shooting a gun is if I were also able to understand the mechanics of operating one.

yes I get that. So don't you think it would help to understand your husbands view on this too? If your kids are with it so is he.
The assumption that only uneducated people can own or shoot firearms is what disturbs me. To make a blanket statement is na?ve.
I'm sure it's regional. I know two people with guns and they are not educated professionals. One works in construction and one is a diesel mechanic. Around here, educated professionals do not own guns for sport or otherwise.

Yeah, my husband with his two engineering degrees and a law degree has one, about to have two. He hunts with them and shoots skeet. He does not and will not ever have a semi-automatic weapon.

I guess when I think semi-automatic i mean the "scary" ones. LOL I don't know much about guns...but those are what I mean!
ETA- And I'm pretty happy I don't know much about guns I have to say.
I guarantee a lot more people own guns than you all realize.
Yeah, this. I've stayed out of the post. But for someone to say that they only know one person that owns a gun and that he's a mechanic is laughable.
This is what kills me about post like this. Well other than the fact tht people don't even know what they are arguing against. I honestly don't know how many of our friends know we have guns. Sure the people DH goes shooting with, but it is not really something we broadcast as many gun owns peers don't. I think people would be shocked at the number of people who own guns.

I truly think there's a regional aspect to that, though. I'm in the Northeast, in suburbs of NYC. Gun owners really truly are an anomaly around here. You have to drive hours to get somewhere you could possibly hunt, so it's not a popular past time and there's very much a stigma attached to gun ownership in this area and people do make assumptions that would be unpopular on this board if they find out you own one. I'm from a rather political group and most of us agree pretty strongly that the second amendment is outdated and needs to be revisited at the very least.

Really? I've lived in or near NYC my entire life and never met someone who hunted lol! Half of my family is vegetarian because they don't believe in killing animals, the other half eats meat but only as long as we know very little about where it came from!

See I know a number of guys who hunt that live in NYC, so they own guns.
Really? I've lived in or near NYC my entire life and never met someone who hunted lol! Half of my family is vegetarian because they don't believe in killing animals, the other half eats meat but only as long as we know very little about where it came from!
LOL Yep, it's very popular nowadays I guess. Almost all the doctors and i-bankers DH has come into contact with lately want to go quail hunt.
Y'all need to read an issue of Garden and Gun.
Huh, learn something new every day! Where do they go, Central Park lol? Everyone knows a real NYer would never be seen off Manhattan island or north of 72nd street!
I guarantee a lot more people own guns than you all realize.

Sounds like a quote from SATC!
It was hinted at in SATC and 30 Rock, but I actually knew people like that! DHs adviser was constantly complaining about the lack of good food near Columbia and hating having to come so far uptown!

My favorite is reading Chowhound...NYers are lazy about food.
The guns he has are in a LOCKED gun safe.nbsp; They are not laying on the kitchen counter
This point isn't 100 valid. My sister was shot and killed by a gun that was in a locked safe. He broke in and took it. It's possible even in a secured box that they can cause harm in the hands of the wrong person.

Hizzo Can you live with the fact that your DH may just not ever understand your position?DH and I run into these types of disagreements a lot.nbsp; I'm more emotional in my decision making and he's completely logical.nbsp; DH also wants some sort of ridiculous gun.nbsp; Now I grew up around them and am not afraid and know how to properly store and secure them.nbsp; I don't have a problem with him getting a basic gun for target practice or something.nbsp; But when he wanted a big fancy action movie gun, I said no.nbsp; I didn't have anything he considered "logical" for a reason other than it made me uncomfortable. We saw a therapist briefly unrelated to this and the most important thing we got out of it was him drilling into DH that he doesn't have to understand my feelings.nbsp; He just has to respect them. It doesn't matter if my feelings make sense to him, it matters that it's how I feel.nbsp; Realizing that we wouldn't always understand one another's point of view but that it didn't mean we didn't love and respect each other was a big deal for us.nbsp;Side note I'm laughing a lot at the NE liberal crap.nbsp; I'm a very liberal NEer for life and all kinds of people own guns.nbsp; I grew up 2 hours north of NYC and EVERYONE had a gun.nbsp; I'm an hour further north than that now and not quite as many but still plenty, liberal and conservative alike.nbsp; And educated and uneducated.
I am also finding it pretty hilarious that so many assume that liberals don't have guns.

Re: If you are anti-gun, come in.

I did not say that I assumed all people from rural KS are "into guns." I stated, " It does not surprise me at all that Hizzo's DH grew up around guns."
The assumption that only uneducated people can own or shoot firearms is what disturbs me. To make a blanket statement is na?ve.

No, I would do it because the only way I would be comfortable with my boys shooting a gun is if I were also able to understand the mechanics of operating one.
my thoughts too.
I'm sure it's regional. I know two people with guns and they are not educated professionals. One works in construction and one is a diesel mechanic. Around here, educated professionals do not own guns for sport or otherwise.

Everybody I know who has a gun...and most are doctors, lawyers and the what not...aka overeducated preppy people not from the backwoods of BFE.
I feel like almost everyone I know has a gun and they all have either a bachelors degree or higher.
