Parenting after a Loss

Solids

I've been checking out www.wholesomebabyfood.com and starting to read up on introducing solids because we'll be starting in a couple of weeks.

Anyways I see avocados and bananas are high on the list for first foods. I know that rice cereal (often recommended by pedi's) is kinda of a "no no" now. But what about homemade brown rice? Can I just make homemade brown rice and then put it in the food processor?

Re: Solids

  • I love that site.  We did try rice cereal with DS and he could not stomach it.  Wew ill start DD on oatmeal and after the three day observation, I will add a bit of mashed banana.  I did try to give DS avocado before and he gagged on it.  Interestingly enough, he loves guacamole now.  Sweet potato and squash make great pur?es too.

  • We didn't do rice at all, I bought oatmeal because there is some nutrition behind it but still haven't really gave it to him. I cooked quinoa on it's own for DS and pured it but it was too thick. I was making all his food but never got it smooth enough so right now I'm doing Earths Best and once he gets some teeth in there and is 100 comfortable with solids ill start making it again.

We started with avocado and he liked it but same thing now it's not smooth enough. Sweet potatoes went over well and same with zucchini.

I wouldn't say rice cereal is a no no, it just has pretty much no nutritional value. Brown is better than white, but I think something like oatmeal is even better. We are skipping cereals all together.

I have heard a lot of people say they are skipping cereals. How long do you mean? Doesn't a baby need the grains eventually? So confused on this topic.

Yea the sight is pretty neat. I haven't had too much time to explore it but definitely will over the next few days.

That does sound good! Did you leave the rice in tact?

  • Sure, you can totally make your own rice cereal. We skipped rice but did oatmeal. I got some "old fashion" oats and used my baby bullet (love that thing! You could use a food processor, too) to make it into a powder and then cooked it on the stove.

We chose to skip cereals because we EBFing and DD was already used all sortsof flavors from what I was eating. To me, it seemed like a step backwards to give her something so bland to intro solids. I started out by giving her sweet potatoes, apples, and bananas. We only did oatmeal after our pedi said it would be a good source of iron for her. It's totally up to you, though. There's no right or wrong answer.

This time I'm not leaving without you.
  • I don't know if the brown rice would be too much better?  But I'm not a nutritional expert.  They do fortify the rice cereal in the box, but the pedi told us it was sort of empty calories (and it doesn't taste good).  So we skipped the cereals and started DD at 6 months with Butternut squash and followed that with other fruits/veggies.  Our dr. was able to give us some guidelines (we started with the yellow/orange, then went to green, etc.), which helped.  Our baby/toddler cookbooks also had some reference grids that helped us decide the order of introductions.  A couple months into it we introduced the oatmeal which she loved (and now homemade oatmeal is her breakfast of choice!).   We did barley after that, and rice a few months later (but she didn't like it).  Good luck with whatever you choose; it's such a fun time to experiment and see what they will like! :)

  • Thanks ladies, so confusing! Luckily there is a whole section on grains on that website that was really helpful. I didn't want to start grains as a first food (probably sweet potatoes) but I wasn't sure when or if I should introduce them. I was confused about the need of iron from oatmeal and such.

  • I had a friend make her own rice cereal. I definitely wouldn't say it's a no-no, it's just your preference for what to introduce first!
