Diono Radian R120 vs. Britax Marathon 70-G3

Anyone have any experience with either of these seats?  I'm trying to decide which to get (since we just got tax return money I figured I would start looking for a convertible car seat).

Both seem to have decent reviews, and I know the diono radian is more narrow for smaller back seats (which is a plus for us since we haven't invested in a larger vehicle as of yet).  But we don't plan on having another LO until DD is around 3 years old... so I won't be trying to squeeze multiple seats in for awhile.

If you've used either of these, pros/cons would be much appreciated... Thanks!

  • The britax seats have a short shell, so if your LO is tall, it might not last as long.

  • We have Radian R120s. My only complaint about the seat is that it is heavy. It's not the best seat for RFing, since youhave to purchase a separate wedge, but we just FF ours since our kids are over 2. Other than that, we're very happy with the seats.

  • I've had two Radians for years, bought them to rf well past two. They will last much longer rf than the Britax convertibles since they are a taller seat. They do really well in cars that have tight spaces (we've used ours in a Mini), and I I would recommend the angle adjuster, it's perfectly safe and correct to use it with the Radian for a baby with good head control. It's also often recommended by tech's for erf since best practice is erf to 3-4.

Don't get me wrong, I think Britax seats are fine, I have two Frontiers because of the tall kids. The Marathon is okay of your lo is short torsoed or small to average sized. If not, you'll find yourself replacing it for another harnessed seat anyway.

What height, weight and shirt size are we talking anyway?

Wait, just saw that your lo is only 3 months, what car  Is this going in? The Radian fits fine for your lo, but it needs to be on the infant recline for about 3 more months.

  • I agree with GimmieTimmies, but I also wanted to add that you should look at the Chicco Nextfit. It was just released and is showing up at some Babies R Us stores. It is also for sale on line at albeebaby for less than what BRU is charging. It will last most kids to a safe booster age, and looks amazingly easy to install.

  • Ditto everything gimmie said. My kids are tall with long torsos, so anything with a short shell or low top harness height gets crossed off the list. If DC is smaller, then the Marathon isn't a bad choice. It's easier to install and use. We had one for DD1, and she made it rear facing to 2.5 years in it, but the older version was also a little taller.

  • Also, if you are interested, there is a facebook group called Car Seats for the Littles (they have a group as well as a page) that is really informative. You can see photos of almost every seat in real life use, see reviews from people that have those seats, etc. There are some photos on the page right now of the Nextfit, and I seriously wish I had a reason to get one. It looks awesome!

There are also a ton of car seat techs on the page, including myself, if you have any installation questions, etc.

  • I have both a Radian and a Roundabout 55 which has almost the same shell as a Marathon. My kid far prefers to sit in the Radian...he seems more comfortable in it and it is also easier to put him in because it sits lower on the seat.

  • I just got the radian r120. I like knowing that I won't have to buy another seat for DS ever. Well maybe another booster... I installed mine in the center on my small car, a 2012 ford focus, without the angle adjuster and it fits well. It sort of tucks between the front seats. DS is comfortable and seems to like it. I also like that it is narrow so I can fit adult passengers next to the seat when I need to.
