Ear Infection Question
Hi Ladies, I normally hang out on the pregnancy boards, but have a question regrading my 18 mo DS. He started day care about 6 weeks ago. Got a cold, which quickly progressed to an ear infection, double conjunctivitis, and another ear infection in the other ear. We have tried amoxocillin, cefdinir and he has now had 3 shots of antibiotics(the last of which was a week ago).
Last night he started pulling at his ear again and woke up several times (a sure fire sign). I am at a loss. The peditrician is driving me crazy and nothing seems to be working.
Have any of you tried any kind of homeopathic remedies with any success? Would you advise going to an ENT doctor at this point?
I am due with my 2nd in a few weeks and really want everyone in my family to be well by the time she gets here. I will be a SAHM starting May 25th so hopefully that will help some. I'm at my wits end with this.

I forgot to add that your pedi could also write a RX for numbing ear drops, which also help.
We were also told warm olive oil can help relieve the pressure that causes pain.
I'd definitely ask for an ENT referral, as it sounds like the antibiotics don't seem to be helping much, or he just keeps getting them back to back to back.

This sounds just like my son. He is on ear infection #5 in the past two months and the only thing that helps are the Rocephin shots, unfortunately. Are the infections going away in between or are they remaining despite the shots? My son's issue is that they go away, then come right back because of his runny nose draining into his ears. We've been referred to an ENT at this point for tubes.
Good luck! Ear infections are awful and frustrating. When in doubt, trust your mommy instincts and ask for a referral.

Yeah, this is a sore spot with me. We go to a large practice where you pretty much only get to see whoever is available. I like 2 out of their 15 doctors and DS has seen a different one 5 out of the last 6 times we have been there. One doctor doesn't know from the next what my son's ears looked like last week...they just go by the chart. Pretty annoying. So we are looking at changing peditricians as well. I know a great pediatric ENT (that I went to when I was a kid) that I would like to take him to, I just need to see if my insurance requires a referral before we make the appointment. (Thanks for listening to my mini-vent:).
They must be going away because it has been in opposite ears. He is now grabbing at the most recent ear.
BTW- Not sure if this makes a difference and if any of you ladies know if it is related. We have been hesistant to fully wean DS off his morning and night time bottles as long as he is still sick. He also takes a pacifier at night when he sleeps. Can either of these things contribute? The pedi has never said anything to indicate one way or another.

I hope you do find another pedi because they should be able to tell just from the chart when your child has been seen and what the issue was. DS's pedi office only has 3 doctors and while that can be a good thing for this type of situation, it's also bad when they are busy. I hope you are able to find a great pedi.
C sucks his thumb all night long and we asked - it doesn't really make a difference when it comes to ear infections. That being said, just make sure he's not drinking laying flat on his back - that can cause drainage to the ears. If that were the cause though, he would have always had this issue - not just recently. KWIM?
In general, ear infections are caused by blockage and build up in their eustation tubes (the tubes that drain their ears down their throat). In a toddler, they are smaller and more horizontal so they are easy to block up. If they get a cold and really snotty, its easy for them to get gunky and infected. :-(

We are going thru this right now! DS has had 5 in the past 6 months and to be honest I think it is the same ear infection the entire time. He has been on every antibiotic and while he is on them he seems better and then 5 or so days later he is irritable and seems to have all the symptoms back. We just got reffered to an ENT and have an appt tomorrow. I was surprised it took this long but I never mentioned it because honestly it scares me. Good luck! Nothing is worse then your LO being in pain.
Yes, you are right. It has only been recently. He only drinks bottles sitting up or reclining, never laying flat. I just want to make sure we are doing everything we can be doing to prevent them but we are doing all we can at this point.
