Is burping necessary?

I just put DD to bed without burping. I'm feeling bad about it. I tried burping her but she fell asleep. DD is formula fed and drinks 6 oz at each feeding. Is it necessary to burp a baby after every feeding?

Re: Is burping necessary?

  • I sure she'll be alright. Don't feel bad, especially if you attempted to burp her. I believe they outgrow the need to be burped sometime around 6 months... it's different for every baby when exactly they are able to burp themselves.

It's still Friday where I am so I'm going to attempt an FFFC and say that I hardly ever have burped my DS. I only did it always in the first couple weeks, since then I've only done it when he seems uncomfortable after eating. Nowadays he's burping on his own so I'm off the hook!

  • At this point I'm not longer burping DD, of she's awake I just make her sit and if she has to, she burps on her own, but it doesn't always happen

If she falls asleep while eating I just lay her down in her crib and call it a night, it's fine

  • I've been having a hard time burping DD and she's been doing okay on her own. If she gets uncomfortable she will cry I burp her and she's good but I haven't had to do this for a while. If she falls asleep while eating I do hold her for a little bit but that's just for snuggles because she is a baby that doesn't like to be held a lot. I wouldn't worry about it if they need help burping they will probably let you know

I haven't burped dd in a while. I didn't even realize until now it just got phased out.

    This.

We still burp DD (I remember I did so with DS for a while too.  It's not like it takes that long so I just do it, I guess), but occasionally she falls asleep before it happens.  I'm sure your LO will let you know if it's an issue.  I assume some babies REALLY need to be burped and others it's not that big of a deal.  It never seems to bother DD when she goes down without one.

At this point I just sit DS up after he eats and he usually burps on his own. I don't burp him at night.

We've phased out burping and DD does fine.

  • Honestly....I didnt know you were supposed to phase out burping...LOL.  :)  We do it sometimes and sometimes we dont.  So we were never really strict on it anyway.

  • I always burp DD. I didn't realize people stopped... I assumed you did it until they stop drinking a bottle.
