Head shivers/shudders

Hey ladies, so my DD has this thing that's a little concerning to me. She's been doing this for months now. Out of nowhere it looks like she's concentrating on something and then her head like shakes a little. Like as if she just got the chills. Its like a shudder/shiver. I don't know. I'm a FTM so I'm worried as hell. I brought it up to her pedi a couple if times but he said he didn't want to do any testing or anything. He didnt seem to concerned. Does anyone else's LO do this? What's going on. Thanks ladies.

My LO does the same thing.  It has greatly decreased as she's gotten older.  My pedi said that it has to do with the integration of the moro reflex.  My LO had a really strong moro reflex so this made sense to me.

I've also heard they do it when they pee... so who knows...

Bottom line... the Dr. said not to worry as long as they remain conscious, aren't zoning out during it, and it doesn't last longer than a second or two.  HTH!

Thanks for the reply. That helps to know!

  • DS also does this when he poops. It is hilarious b/c he will also make this "wuuhhhh" sound like he's so relieved it's over.

Thanks ladies!! I really hope it's nothing! She's been doing it more often throughout the day and it freaks me out. Thanks for your replies.

  • My DD did the same thing and as a FTM I was super worried as well.. Dr. just said it was her nervous system developing or that sometimes babies just like the feel of it so they do it just for the fun of it.  Also could be when they pee, or just "snapping out it" so to speak..  My LO grew out of it eventually as she moved on to bigger and better things. She just turned 1 yr and hasn't done it for months.

If you are really concerned, talk to your Dr., but it's probably your LO learning what it feels like and developing.

  • Hi! My DS does the same thing. I've noticed it comes and goes and it tends to happen more frequently when he is reaching new physical milestones. Has she recently started doing something new? (Sitting, crawling, standing, whatever?) My DS is the most physically active he's ever been and he's been shuddering several times per day. I think his body is just learning how to control itself in new ways and sometimes things misfire because it's all so new.

I also spoke to the pedi because we DO have a family history of a rare seizure disorder called tuberous sclerosis, but the pedi assured me that if he is not losing consciousness or excessively tired afterward then it's nothing to be worried about. As long as baby goes along her merry way after one of these shudders I think you're a-ok! HTH
