Breathable Bumpers and Pulling Up

We have the breathable bumpers in our crib but LO is getting really close to pulling up on her own. I know you are suppose to take bumpers down when they can pull up but is that for regular bumpers? Her bumpers tend to sink down some when she puts her legs on them. I would like to keep them up, after we lower the crib of course, just because she does tend to sleep with her face near the bars and she also strokes the bumper when she is going to sleep. Obviously if it is just too much of a hazard they are coming down I'm just wondering if anyone has had a baby actually try and successfully climb on breathable bumpers when they aren't as firm as regular ones.

Re: Breathable Bumpers and Pulling Up

  • We have the breathable bumpers too. With the crib lowered all the way, even if my lo tried (which she wouldnt succeed) she is still too low to be able to climb over the railing. She is able to stand alone and take a step or two, but at 10 months, she cant climb out by pulling herself up and over. Shes a tad short though, if that makes a difference.

  • Im pretty sure it goes for all bumpers... especially if you have a climber.  DD is 10 mo's and just started standing independently. We have the crib lowered to the lowest rung, and know that she can't get out, but if she starts to climb the bumpers will def. be removed. For now, though, if she doesn't have them in there, she gets her legs stuck through the crib slots.

  • They collapse when our baby tries to step on them.  I wouldn't worry about them.  I even remembering reading the collapsing part as a safety feature.
  • Once DD started pulling herself up in her crib I removed her breathable bumper.  The reason I installed it in the first place was because at one point her limbs would get stuck between the bars and she wouldn't be able to untangle herself.  This no longer happens, so there is no longer a need to keep the breathable bumper.  Kids can be acrobats so I just don't see this being worth the risk.
