Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Table food

My peds told me at my sons 9 month check up to start table food and now my son is 11 months old and I do try table food but I am terrified of choking. He's on stage three foods and has had puffs, strawberries, spaghetti, and macaroni. He seems fine eating them, it's me I'm sure of it. Any tips or advice on how to transition into all table food? What foods worked best to try out for you and baby?

Thanks for any advice.

  • toast and cheerios are my little ones favourites, also blueberries (cut)

  • My baby girl doesn't have any teeth yet, so you may be able to get away with more than we do...

    Her common items are:

Spinach, peas, avocado, sweet potato, butternut squash, yams, blueberries cut in 1/2, cantaloupe, watermelon, mango, egg yolks (hard boiled or fried), canned white or black beans, ground turkey, shredded or small chunks of cheese, pancakes, Cheerios, or tortillas cut up.

  • My LO never liked purees so we've done table food since about 7 months.  She eats everything we do.  For dinner she had some of our burgers, baked beans and some tomatos.  Honestly babies have a really good gag reflex so I wouldn't worry about choking.  If for some reason she can't swollow something she just spits it out (i.e. sometimes she will spit out the skin of a blueberry or tomato).  Of course if she does choke a little bit on something that she can't get chewed up enough she throws up but it all gets out and she's fine (this happened at the beginning with some banana).

FTR my LO only has her two bottom teeth and does not use them at all to chew her food so I don't think teeth matter (I mean I don't chew with my front teeth) so just make sure that all food you give is pretty mushy.  Sweet potatos are good, shredded chicken, cheese cubes, scrambled eggs, blueberries, etc.  I also used canned veggies for her since they are already pretty mushy (and cheap).

  • DD loves rice.  I cook brown rice and freeze it in ice cube trays, so it is easy to make a baby-sized portion.  She also loves avocado, watermelon, sweet potato, and banana.  I just cut into chunks (obviously, the sweet potato is cooked).  She picks them up and takes bites.  She gags and spits stuff out if she takes too big of a bite.

She had GI issues and could not eat food until 10 months, so we have to try things slowly.  I would love to give her cheese or toast, but I am afraid her tummy will rebel.  I am planning to give her chicken and quinoa this week.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
