Student loans are not annoying because you can't be relieved from them.
YOU TOOK OUT THE LOANS. YOU AND ONLY YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING THEM BACK.
this one hits a serious nerve. waaahhhh I can't file for bankruptcy and pretend I never signed all that paperwork to take out a loan. good. They SHOULD garnish your wages to pay it back.
every person who skips their repayment flucks over the next generation of students who want an education.
I agree. However, I do think it's ridiculous that there hasn't been an organized effort to truly educate students on what exactly student loans mean (e.g., how much that $40,000 will cost on a monthly basis once the student graduates). There should be a mandatory educational session of some kind before taking on the loans, even if it's just an online lesson and comprehension quiz at the end. But yeah, I can't get on board with the whining about what a burden loans are and how they should just be forgiven.
I actually thought you did have to watch an online thing before getting federal loans?
Oops. If so, and there's a comprehension quiz at the end, cool. Then I really can't get behind the whining, sorry. I think it's crappy that we bailed out a bunch of giant companies, but I don't think that means private citizens are entitled to a bail-out, as well.
FTR, I have never had student loans. I took a long time completing my degree and paid cash, then for the last couple years got reimbursed by my employer.

OMFG. If a person has $1.44 in her checking account and has to use a credit card to afford her kid's formula because she has no money, but drives a brand new SUV, then duh, she can't afford the car. The math on this is not hard. Team pokedot, and pokedot shouldn't have backed down.
Are you back for good?
I can't stay away. LOL. I was actually going to just step away from this post, but then I saw all the attacking of pokedot for being "mean," when she was not at all. The OP was "mean" for judging someone for using food stamps and projecting her own issues on to him (as hmp+mrj said, most likely he was irritated that the cashier didn't know how to ring in the coupons, not because she was buying formula). OP was "mean" for snapping at other posters here who pointed out that maybe she could use those food stamps if she can't afford formula. It was not mean to bring up something OP has apparently discussed before (at least one new SUV, possibly a new truck?) as evidence that maybe her spending priorities are out of order.
A lifestyle isn't "affordable" just because you can pay the bills when your paycheck comes in. It's affordable when you can pay the bills without depending on that paycheck. Sounds like newt would be screwed if they missed a paycheck, and that can happen for all sorts of reason. Maybe that's a harsh reality, but she needs to face it.
Again, a person can be financially stable enough to afford a car and all that comes with it and have circumstances change after the fact. But I know from previous posts that I'm talking to a brick wall.

I got an EBT card for my maternity and short term disability payments when I was out on maternity leave. It looked like a standard Bank of America Visa debit card - no identifying marks that I could see. It had a PIN and everything.
That actually is stated as one of the reasons for putting americorps volunteers on assistance, and I definitely do know some people who had their eyes seriously and positively opened. I still hated standing in line and having inquiring eyes on my EBT card. They look kind of like credit cards here but they have a giant covered wagon printed on the front so it's not hard to figure it out.
Maybe I'm totally dense, but I can honestly say that I've never noticed a difference if someone is using an EBT card vs a check/credit card. I have no idea what they look like, and if the person in front of me was swiping something, I wouldn't think to notice "Oh, that's an EBT card".
Just trying to say - I know some recipients may be self-conscious about it, but I don't think as many people notice it as one may think.
Yeah, I also have no clue. I really don't care how a person is paying for their groceries. Well, unless it's a check. Those take forever.

Every state is different. Apparently where LL lives they're bright green. Here they have a giant covered wagon and say Oregon Trail in large font. I mean if you're not paying attention cool, but also, the computer systems at some stores aren't up to date enough to communicate with EBT cards so you have to say out loud "I'm paying with food stamps" it's very humbling.

I don't think anyone was whining. It's great that you didn't need to take out student loans but it is necessary for some people and it is a lot to take on when one is just starting to work right out of college.
For instance, I pay almost $1000 a month on student loans. It is a big portion of our budget and it is stressful but we make it a priority to make the payments on time.
I think the education system should add classes that actually prepare students for the real world. Learn to budget, balance a checkbook, read the standard legal paperwork we all encounter over our years. Explain loans, interest, and how that all comes out in a monthly payment.
I also think that parents should put more focus on teaching these things as well. I realize the education system can't be responsible for everything and we all have to take the lead role in raising our kids, but there are parents out there who don't even understand this shiz themselves, so having the schools doing it as well might help cover the gaps.
Some do. At my school they have a class called Consumer Math that does exactly that. They calculate debt-to-income ratios, interest and principle payments on loans, etc. The kids hate it because they don't see how it applies in real life...and for most of them, it doesn't yet. That's the problem. It all goes right over their heads until it actually MEANS something, you know?

Had you read through everything you would know part if it. And had you read my other comments you would see that I talk to newt daily. I am quite aware of her situation. It is temporary. And she wasn't judging. It came a cross that way but I explained it in one of my other posts defending her. Poke whatever continued to judge way past that.

Absolutely, and these things used to be standard parts of the educational system in this country. My parents taught me nothing about personal finance. I learned it all on my own when I was first out on my own. My mom and stepdad are well off, but spend it all and overuse credit. My dad always made a modest living and lived within his means, but refused to hold credit because he didn't trust "the man" (old hippie type), so everything was done in cash. I learned that neither extreme is fiscally sound, and seriously thank god for the Internet, or I wouldn't have learned a lot of what I did.

ITA. I had a class in high school as part of my work program (I did 3 classes a day and worked in the afternoons) that taught us budgeting, resume writing, how to do taxes, all sorts of stuff. It was really helpful.

Sorry, wasn't clear. I was talking about the whining I see in general, not anything here. I have a couple FB friends who have posted multiple memes and such about how the government bailed out GM, but can't find money to bail out these poor young adults who took out burdensome student loans. Mind you, these are people who are gainfully employed.
And I absolutely respect the usefulness of SLs! I was clarifying that I never took out any, so I don't know the details of any counseling that goes along with them. But I didn't want it to come off as privileged and have people assume my parents paid my way, thus my clarification that I paid my own way. I realize that's not an option for most, and believe me, I wish I had gone the traditional route and done college while not working, but I'll admit it's nice not repaying a loan.

I only judge after someone miswords something or says the wrong thing. Then it's ok to judge. Snide comment equals the ok to judge.
Yeah, because I judge hypocrisy. I'm not going to judge a person for not being able to afford something but doing the best she can to make ends meet, but if she in turn judges someone for the same thing, I'll judge her for that. And at that point, I'm not judging her inability to afford something, but rather her snobby attitude.

Even if that wasn't her intention, that's how her words read to pretty much everyone here. If she wasn't judging his use of food stamps, including that in the description of the man had no place in her biitching.
She flucked up. She never came back to own up to it and apologize, just got all flippy-outty on LL and disappeared.
I totally judge my cousin's money management, but quietly to myself. She judges how much better at housekeeping she is. It's all fair. Her newest adventure was buying a new SUV because she could only use premium gas in her three year old sedan and that was too expensive. That's some good math there.
Newt, I'm guessing you are gone at this point but I will ask anyway. How do you know the guy wasn't upset about the fact that the cashier didn't know how to ring up the coupons, since that is her job, and not because you were using coupons? Seems more plausible to me.
My guess is that he had to poop.
I think it boils down to: people get defensive when they feel judged.
Sorry I had to get in my "brand new" SUV and drive to an appt.
Yes I know I was wrong for judging that guy. Ppl in my area flaunt there EBT cards like new jewelry. I'm sure that he was more frustrated with the cashier then me but he could have either moved to a different line or not been a jerk about it. I miscalculated my grocery budget this week hence the 30 dollars on my CC.
Yes I drive a newer SUV and my H was looking at a fancy truck but he still hasn't gotten one yet. We are budgeted for those payments... I how ever overspent on groceries this week... My bad.
My SUV purchase was my coping mechanism for the miscarriage I had gone thru just before I bought it. And I had to get something newer not only for better gas mileage but the transmission was shot in my other vehicle so we traded it in to avoid paying 5,000 dollars for a new transmission.
To everyone who came to my defense thank you.
I'll be sure next week not to blow my budget so hard

It's one of the few things DH and I don't agree about--he thinks the original "Last Kiss" is better, I think Pearl Jam's version is.
I admit to texting DH with "arrghkjdfi;nv" kinds of messages with DD is being a crabcakes, but never texting him with "she's being awesome!" so I think he thinks she's testier than she is. Oh well..

I hope you were thinking about getting a new car before the mouse incident and that just solidified it for you. If not, I think getting a new car was a bit of an over-reaction.
With that said, congrats on the new car. What did you get?
I think newt is overwhelmed with life but that's no excuse to blow up on Lois. That's all I got on that one.
My FFFC, I found evidence that I had a mouse in my car and FREAKED out. My H set a trap and finally caught it. I was so grossed out that I talked him in to getting me a new car. Which we did. Don't worry, we could afford it.

Yes we get new cars quite a bit. I lease and my old vehicle was worth a LOT more than its residual. Therefore, we could trade it in and be up almost 3k. I got a 2013 Acadia. We actually are paying less now than we were on my 2011 Traverse.
I'm pisssed that we again do not qualify to get our home refinanced. First we didn't qualify for HARP because we didn't go through the right lender. The bank guy assured DH they were doing there own thing that we would be qualified for. DH went through all the initial paperwork and just found out we don't qualify for this one either. I seriously want to go to the bank and yell at the guy. I know it's not his fault, though, so I won't.
Re: FFFC The Judgemental Wankers Edition
Again, a person can be financially stable enough to afford a car and all that comes with it and have circumstances change after the fact. But I know from previous posts that I'm talking to a brick wall.
Yeah, I also have no clue. I really don't care how a person is paying for their groceries. Well, unless it's a check. Those take forever.
Unless they have to temporarily put 30 dollars of it on a cc for the time being.
Understandable - I didn't realize that.
How would I know that? And no, I wouldn't judge that. I judge the person who does that, but turns around and judges the guy using public assistance. That's judgeworthy, and that *** deserves to be called out.

Yeah, I know. But redneck was trying to say I judge Newt for using a credit card, and I was clarifying that I absolutely don't judge that, and in fact have sympathy for that situation, until that person makes snide comments about another person needing assistance.
Except that wasn't her intent. She has nothing against state assistance. Mobilehashtag whathylainesaid.
Apparently that's too subtle a distinction for you, though.
Gotcha. I guess I misread it. I wish more than anything I didn't have student loans.
+1
Except she wasn't trying to be judgement all. But I've only said that like eleventy times. So I'm not quite sure you will read it this time either.
You are right poppy. I am done.
Is this directed at something I've done? If so, please share. I'd love to know what TOS I've supposedly violated.
Definitely not agreeing with Catbus here, but if someone only read her initial post, and not the pages that followed, it could totally be taken as passing judgement.
For the record, I did read the whole thread before commenting. I am pretty damn sure Newt was judging. I do find it funny how it's apparently a scarlet letter to agree with me, though.
This, exactly.
My school offered a class like that. I'm not sure if it was required but everyone took it because it was a fun class. It was called something like Life Skills.
Pear Jam's "Where oh Where" song makes me cry every.single.time.
I went to Jack in the Box yesterday and hid the evidence from DH.
Sometimes I fudge Millie's scampness to DH when he gets home so he'll feel sorry for me and take care of her so I can take a nap.

unem..I love when you are around.
another confession...when I read bringing up bug and bee i cry every single time. What a wonderful, adventurous family to be a part of. I am incredibly envious of their lives.
Oh well..
I'm guilty of this too. It helps when she's super cranky on his days off too.
Us too!!
