Parenting after a Loss

anybody else giving cereal at 3 months??

Hey ladies...

At Cole's2 month check up his dr.  told me i could give him cereal from a bowl at three months and then start introducing  fruit and or veggies 4 months...he will be 3 months old on Tuesday and i am not sure what i want to do...??? He is alreading getting cereal in his bottles during the day for reflux .(3 -  4ounce bottles) while at daycare. I pump for daycare and he exclusively nurses while at home so during the week day is his only cereal in take...should I try cereal at home or wait until he is 4 months old??

What is everybody else doing??

Re: anybody else giving cereal at 3 months??

  • Most pedis recommend 46 months and the most up to date stuff is 6 months. We skipped cereal all together at 6 months and went right into veggies and fruits. I'm not sure with his reflux if those recommendations would change. I love his name! I'm biased but its still great

  • I'm so surprised when I hear Pedis say this kind of thing. Especially bc the AAP recommends not starting any solids until 6m to help with chilhood obesity rates and food allergies.

We started DD on oatmeal and fruits and veggies at 6m. We didn't do rice cereal bc there isn't nutritional value and it causes constipation. Oh and tastes like garbage.

  • I'm going to start at 6 months with barley cereal recommended by my pedi. He did say I could start anytime after 4 months when they seemed ready. My DD is a little bit interested in food now. I put a banana up to her mouth to see what she would do and she opened wide, lol. My DS stared at me like - are you kidding me...that's not my bottle! So, right now I'm taking my time researching, setting up the high chairs, and may start making and freezing some fruit & veggies. 6 months will be here before I know it!

  • Wow Im surprised your pedi said that. The new recommendation is 6 months for a ton of reasons. My doc did give me a list of situations on which I might want to start solids between 4 to 5 months but we'll be sticking with 6 months.

I'm planning to wait until 6 months to introduce anything that's not breast milk.

  • Our pedi said we could start at 5-6 months I originally planned to start closer to 6 months but DD seemed interested sooner an DH wanted to try so we started giving her sticks of fruits veggies to play with at dinner (she had already been sitting in her highchair with toys at meal times for a while). At first she just pushed them around her tray and occasionally licked them but she now seems to be trying to eat some of it and I'm now starting to see a difference in her diapers.
  • We started giving rice cereal in his bottles for reflux, but I am slowly weaning B from that. I am with PP, going to wait until closer to 6 months and go right to fruits/ veggies. He is starting to show interest in food though, so we'll see what happens. He still has the tongue thrust reflex though, and can only sit unsupported for like 30 seconds at a time, so I know we're not there yet.

  • I suppose if there is absolutely a reason I will give my LO food early, otherwise nothing solid until 6 months and if I can stretch it, nothing solid till closer to a year is the plan. But we'll see.

  • We didn't start with cereal - we started with veggies and fruits (butternut squash was the very first).  The first grain we did was oatmeal, not rice.  We waited until she was 6 months old to start any solids.  We chose squash because we felt her first experience should be something more appealing than wallpaper paste and our pedi was totally on board with our strategy.  Our pedi also told us she was getting everything she needed from my BM and there was no need to rush into solids before 6 months.  Whatever you choose and what works for your family/baby will be the right choice! :)

DD also had severe reflux and we were told that cereal in the bottle not only was not helpful, but could be dangerous so we were told not to do that.  It's so confusing though, because every baby is different and every pedi has different opinions so obviously go with what your doctor advises...  Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the suggestions....you have all been helpful....I think i have decided to wait on the cereal and will try something a little nutritional when we do solid foods.  Putting cereal in his bottle seems to help with his reflux but i dont put the full amount the dr. suggested....hopefully I can wean him from that soon...
