Newborn Photographer Tipping?

So, I'm really bad with what and when to tip. We are having a newborn photography session today and I am assuming I should tip the photographer, but how much? The session is $200 (+$25 for travel expenses). So how does this work?!

TIA

Re: Newborn Photographer Tipping?

  • I've been doing NB photography since 2005 and I think only one person has tried to tip me. They set their own prices, don't worry about tipping. If you like the pictures, a thank you card later on is a nice touch though!

  • I've been doing portraits and wedding for a while and typically get tipped more often for weddings - but I have gotten tipped a few times for portraits. People usually give anywhere between 5-20%. Most often about 10%. Hope that helps!

  • I've heard that if the person owns the company (like my newborn photog does) that you don't need to tip because she set her own price (as PP said). If the photog works for a company that he/she does not own, I would offer a tip, probably 20% like any other service industry.

This exactly. And it's also true with any type of vendor. Ex. for our wedding, we tipped the girl running the photobooth and the person "managing" our event. But we did not tip our photogs or the DJ because they own their own companies.
