my 8 month old got tubes today. after the procedure he was understandably fussy, so while the post-op nurse was giving me the run down, i asked if she wouldn't mind if i nursed him. she looked at me like i had 3 heads and said "um, yeah, i guess. do i need to shut the curtain?" a year ago, that would have been enough to make me shut my mouth and desperately try to find other ways to comfort my crying baby. but today i just kept right on going. i told her she could shut it if she wanted to and just popped him right on (he calmed down right away too). meanwhile she gave me the post-op orders while awkwardly avoiding eye contact, lol. i was surprised by how little her reaction phased me. i don't post often, but as a lurker i have to say i think this board has greatly influenced my ability to stick up for my kiddo and his need to nurse for food or comfort, so thank you!
in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God, in Christ Jesus, for you

Re: breastfeeding gave me balls.
Good job! It is bizarre that a pediatric nurse would be uncomfortable with nursing. You were part of the solution, though, as every time she sees it (and sees it work to comfort a very upset baby) she will become more comfortable.
I never meant to become someone that changes the world, but I really do think I've improved it a bit with some fearless breastfeeding.

that IS weird! why are people so squeamish about boobs?
Good for you!
And breastfeeding after surgery is great, I have to imagine how good it must have made your LO feel.
DS had minor surgery shortly before his first birthday. The first thing I did when we got to see him post-op was start bfing him. The dr. was kind of weird about it and ended up standing on the other side of the curtain while talking about how things went.
Awesome!! I seriously love stories like this!
When DS was in the hospital and I had to pump a team of docs came in and said they could come back in 30 min, I just said "why? They're just breasts and I am getting my son his milk. No need to leave." The one female doctor gave me that "You go girl" look and we chatted about his tests.
Like I said, awesome!
