self biting

Hey ladies. Em has started biting herself lately, mostly out of frustration when she is corrected or if I or a friend takes something away from her. She bites hard enough to leave marks. Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions?
TIA!

Re: self biting

  • Oliver would head butt and slam himself into the ground when he did not get his way.  I think the reason why they do it is because they get a reaction.  Somehow they know it bothers you that they are hurting themselves.   My gut tells me to ignore the behavior, or at least not make it a big deal.  Just say  "oh no, biting hurts."

  • Mine does this too out of frustration. We tell him ouch, no, biting isn't good. I'm assuming he will grow out of it when he's better at expressing himself.

  • Mine does this too. I figure better himself than others (seriously, he is/was a 'biter' for awhile....). I ignore the behavior, I've read that not giving stuff like that any kind of attention, good or bad, is best.
