Breast pump recommendations, please.

Yeah, we've talked about this, but I never paid attention because I assumed my awesome health insurance covered it.  Whelp, my awesome health insurance covers everything EXCEPT breast pumps.  Of course!  If I discover that my hospital rents one, I'll go with that.  Just in case they don't, I'd like to be informed enough to choose my own and have it not suck.

What's a quality, double- or single-electric pump you BTDTs would recommend?  I'd definitely prefer something that can plug into the wall.

Thank you!

  • If you're buying your own, the best bang for your buck is the Ameda Purely Yours.

Other good options are Medela (Freestyle or Pump in Style Advance) and Hygeia Enjoye.

Hospital rentals are good for short-term use and best for bringing in milk supply with a non-latching baby, but they're very expensive if you plan to keep pumping at work. They're also really heavy, so you don't want to lug them around.

Most people have Medela pumps, but it's mostly marketing not that they're the best product.

  • I had a medela swing pump last time, it's a single. I really liked it. This time I am getting a Medela Pump in Style through insurance.

My hospital has an amazing lactation services dept and shop that exclusively sells Medela. So by shopping there I can get accessories at a great discount.

Out of my 15 friends who are or did BF, 13 had Medela pumps and two had ameda pumps. All are happy with their pumps though.

I chose Medela because their headquarters is near my hometown. Silly, but I wanted to support little McHenry, IL.

  • I exclusively pumped for 6 months with DD and plan on doing the same again. I'll be using my Medela Pump In Style Advance again too! I started with the Freestyle, but the PISA was amazingly better since it's a double. Had zero issues with it and obviously used it a ton.

The Freestyle is a cordless double electric. Swing is the single.

  • Medela PIS. It is a double electric.

  • I got the Medela PISA don't have experience with it but it came highly recommended by three moms at work (one who has been pumping for 1.5 years) and my best friend. Double electric and has a car adapter and wall outlet plug.
  • I got the Medela PIS, will use again for this LO. Love it. Plugs into wall, but also has battery pack. I think I only needed to use the battery twice, but was nice to know I had it worst case.

  • It's cheaper to buy a pump than to rent one. I have the Medela Pump In Style Advanced (PISA) and the Freestyle. Love them both. I replaced my PISA with the freestyle because it fell off my bed and a part broke. I got the replacement plan when I bought the PISA and decided to upgrade to the Freestyle.

  • If you plan to exclusively pump, I would highly recommend the freestyle. I had the PISA, and got extremely frustrated not being mobile 7 times a day for 15 minutes. I just kept thinking about all the things I could be getting done at the same time!

  • I've heard great things about both the Medela brand and Ameda.

My close friend had zero problems with her Medela pump and it was offered to me for free by my insurance so I went that route.

I believe both brands are a safe way to go.

EDIT: Because I plan on EB/EP for as long as possible I'm getting a double electric that comes with the a/c adapter for the wall.
I'll be a working mom so BF exclusive to the breast won't be an option once I return to work.

  • I'm getting the Dr. Browns double electric pump. It's a little more reasonably priced at $250 since my insurance doesn't cover it and it has great reviews.

This is what I have now. I started with the medela swing and it was so uncomfortable. I hated the breast cups. I bought the simplesse, now Dr Brown's and it was  heaven. Highly recommended it to everyone!

crogers - I think that you mentioned it on a post months ago and that prompted me to look into it. I love the idea behind it and the reviews seem great. So, thank you!

  • Medela PISA. Double-electric and works great, lasts forever, good customer service.  Plugs in to the wall but also has battery and car adapters.  You can pump directly into the Medela and Dr. Brown bottles if you want to.

  • I loved my Medela PISA. I also highly recommend having a manual pump as a backup, I liked mine more than the PISA. I also used a Medela Symphony hospital grade at work and liked it too, but because I'm having more kids it made since for me to purchase my own pump as opposed to renting one.

If you have private insurance, the Affordable Care Act actually REQUIRES that they cover it for you.  I'd dig a little deeper into it.

    Ditto the Medela

Mine only covers a manual one. We've called multiple times. Other pregnant teacher friends of mine with the same insurance have also called multiple times and gotten the same response.

  • Not all insurance companies cover electric pumps. I work for a healthcare company so thought I was safe. But called and found out they only cover manual pumps :
  • I used the Medela PISA and plan to use it again. I can't compare it to any other models, but I used it for over a year at work two to three times a day with no issues. I'm crossing my fingers it lasts another year.
