Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8 month old development

LO is nearly 8 months old and after looking at the developmental milestones, and how I am supposed to "help" him, I'm a little concerned. Apparently I'm supposed to be reading to him to help his language skills....but all he wants to do is eat books, not look at them while I read. His attention span is zero to none, so things like practicing waving, peek a boo, patty cake doesn't last more than 3 seconds. Do I just have an easily distracted baby or should I be more concerned that he's not interested/catching on?

  • Yeah....most babies like to eat the books lol...I wouldn't worry about his attention span quite yet...and all babies develop at different rates.

As far as books go though, I do have a suggestion.....babies love repetition...so pick out one book and work on it for awhile....read it to him a few times a day for like a week, then add another. My kid is obsessed with Goodnight Moon and Perfect Piggies by Sandra Boynton. He sits perfectly still and stares at those two books and listens, but any other ones he is all over the place.  Anyways, if he grabs the book, that's okay! My baby always grabs the book as I am turning the pages, so I always say " thank you for helping mommy turn the page."  Also, if he is being a real wiggle worm, I put him in his high chair and read him the book from far enough away that he can't grab it.

  • Babies that age are not expected to sit there and listen to books. But believe it or not they can get something from listening to you read even if they are crawling around you, chewing on books, etc. DS didn't really sit there and listen until he was around 18 months old but he turned out to have a large vocabulary and is very articulate. Now at 3 he loves books. Just do your best and don't expect too much from him.

  • Just echoing what PPs said.  It's totally normal for babies to want to eat the books!  But also +1 to PP about repetition.  We find that some books - esp ones with strong rhyme & rhythm - capture DS's attention more than others.  And we literally do the same 4 books over and over again.

And it's normal to have an attention span of zero.  My DS is constantly on the move; he can't even be still for 1 second, and always wanting to grab the next toy...
