Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Curious what other moms would do...

Just want some opinions....

Nash still wakes 2-3x a night and will only fall back asleep if he gets a bottle. He was STTN right when he turned a year old, sometimes would wake at 4am for a paci. He was recently sick with a cold in his eyes, then a cold, then pneumonia! While he was sick, I would sleep with him, in his room, on the spare bed in there. He would sleep great in the big bed.

Long story short--should I transition him to the big bed where he is comfortable at 16 months old and hope the bottle waking nonsense goes away on it's own? Or reduce bottle ounces, CIO, or whatever method breaks the mold to get rid of the bottle while he is still in his crib?(I have tried CIO before and some nights it worked, others he would cry for 3 hours)

Thanks Ladies!

Re: Curious what other moms would do...

  • I don't know about the toddler bed part...we stopped the night time bottle cold turkey a month ago. I was so nervous about stopping and letting him CIO but he did fine. I realized that I was the one still holding on to it. We just gave him some milk in his sippy after dinner and put him down without a bottle. He cried for 20 min the first night, 45 min the second but that was it. He sleeps though the night now no problem.  The key is to do it and stick with it. once you decide no more night time bottles that is it, pack them up and store them away. Worked for us anyways. Good luck!

  • I would break the bottle/sleep association ASAP by reducing the amount of bottles to get to zero.  There is absolutely no reason a 16 month old needs to eat in the middle of the night.

When you put him in the crib initially, are you putting him in drowsy but awake so he learns to put himself to sleep?

  • He puts himself to sleep without a bottle. I lay him down around 7:30 and he's quiet and sleeping by 8. He's fully awake when he goes to his crib too!

That's awesome!  So, you know he can do it.

I would suggest looking up a bit on babies' sleep cycles.  I am guessing what is happening is that when he hits a light phase of sleep he has relied on a bottle to doze himself back off.  The way I have seen it explained is that we all night wake, but as adults, we just flip our pillow or whatever and fall back asleep without even noticing the wake up from the light phase of sleep.

I would totally start cutting the bottles down slowly over several weeks.  You might need to hold him and console him, but always put him in the crib drowsy but awake or you will just be replacing one sleep association with another (rocking, cuddling to sleep).

I talk like an expert, but have a very inconsistent way of dealing with DD's night wake ups too, this is just me telling what I think should be done.  Not saying I am perfect at doing it myself LOL!.

  • Our LO has been in a full bed since 15 months, because it's the only place he'll STTN as well. We barricade him in with pillows.

This is what I would do  - cold turkey and stick with it.  You may have a couple of rough nights, but worth it in the long run!  Good luck!

  • Not sure if you have the same style crib mattress that we have, but ours has an infant side and a toddler side. Maybe he sleeps better in the big bed because the mattress is more comfy. Try flipping the crib mattress to see if that helps?!?!? Which reminds me, I need to do that.

We do CIO but it's rarely actual crying. Usually just babbling/talking/fussing for about 5 min then tossing to get comfy for about 5 min then sttn. It works for us, but I know it doesn't work for all. Best of luck.

  • I would suggest cutting back to 1 bottle at night at first.  Not too long later (maybe a week), take that bottle out.  CIO is probably going to be your best hope.
