  • I avoided it during first trimester because I read multiple studies showing a link between caffeine and miscarriage during the early stages of pregnancy. I'd say around 16 weeks I started drinking my normal coffee again which is just a medium iced coffee three or four times a week.

  • Pre pregnancy I drank 2-3 cups of coffee a day, but since getting pregnant I haven't had any. After 2 losses I just wasn't willing to take any chances, no matter how small.

I also don't eat chocolate, but I have had sporadic cravings for Coke (which I never drink!!) so have had 1 every 2 weeks or so. Even then, I won't drink soda that is anywhere near flat so I tend to only get through half a 300ml bottle.

I do miss my coffee, but will be holding off until after I'm done BF.

I had no caffeine with my 1st pregnancy, but this time working full time and having a 1 year old at home, there's just no way.  I just limit to 1 caffeine drink a day - sometimes diet coke, sometimes iced tea.
  • I'm probably at 100-175 mg/day. Caffeine free coke makes me gag...

  • I am a soda addict and switched to caffeine free regular coke. But once in a blue moon if I'm in a restaurant and don't feel like sprite (no caffeine), I'll order a regular coke.  I'd say that's probably like once every few weeks.  I wouldnt worry about a little bit though, I think they say up to one cup of coffee a day is okay.  I personally don't drink coffee (and switched to decaf tea) but I know many women who drank caff beverages and had healthy happy babies.

I kept it to one cup of tea a day for the 1st 1.5 trimesters and now I have a cup of coffee in the AM and and iced tea or two in the afternoon. From what I have read, the studies on caffeine have been pretty inconclusive with correlations to miscarriages being weak at best.
  • You are allowed to have under 200 mg/day.  I asked my Dr. about this, too because all I want is iced tea.  I usually have decaf coffee, though if I want it because there is a lot more caffeine in coffee.  I have a chart the Dr. gave me.  Here's some info from it:

avg. 8 oz. cup of coffee has about 65 - 120 mg. caffeine

avg. 8 oz. cup of hot tea has about 20 - 90 mg. caffeine

avg. 8 oz. glass of iced tea has about 9 - 50 mg. caffeine

avg. 8 oz. glass of soda has about 20 - 40 mg. caffeine

avg. 8 oz. cup of hot cocoa has about 3 - 32 mg. caffeine

1oz. milk chocolate has about 1- 15 mg. caffeine

    Hope this helps!

  • I asked my doctor if coffee was ok during pregnancy and she said a cup a day is fine. So I'm sure if you limit yourself to one 8oz portion of soda a day -as long as it is not diet (because of artificial sweetner) you should be fine. Plus if you are desparately craving it once in a while is not going to hurt you or the baby. Moderation is key. Hope this helps.
  • I've had a few cokes during the first trimester (no more than one a week on average) and I've had about 5 iced cappuccinos. But I just realized as I read this string that I've been adding iced tea to my water (water alone makes me nauseous and I'm allergic to both lemons and cucumber so don't even suggest that!). Never thought about the fact that there is caffeine in iced tea...oops! Luckily I'm still way below the 200 mg/day that I've read is the suggested max. I'm more worried about the amount of sugar I've been consuming!

This! I didn't drink my caffeinated Starbucks or Pepsi until the middle of second trimester. And now I limit myself to 150 mg of caffeine per day.
