  I remember when my mom was pregnant with my sister I wanted her to name her Ariel so bad! 20+ years later and I still like the name. I do think of a mermaid each and everytime I hear it though which may or may not bother you.

  My cousin's name was Ariel and he was a boy so I think of a boy when I hear it as well.

  I used to work with a super annoying girl named Ariel and it totally ruined the name for me.  But, before that, I didn't mind it.

  All the Ariels I've known are males, therefore, it's a boy's name to me. Ariela/Ariella is the feminine version. I think Arielle is the French feminine spelling.

  Who cares if it has a Disney association?

  Arielle would be better. Ariel is actually a boy's name and pronounced differently. Just because the people at Disney were too dumb to figure this out doesn't mean the rest of us should stick with.

  Arielle is pretty, I'd get over the mermaid reference.

  Ariel is an amazing name! Yes I think the mermaid but that wouldn't matter to me. HUnfortunately my step sister is named Aeriel.

  I have a student named Arielle that is very sweet, and I don't think of the mermaid when I see/talk to her.  Even though I don't make the Disney association with her name, and I really like it, the fact that other people might make mermaid comments makes me hesitate to use it for our baby.  (although it is still on our list!)  I also really like Brielle and Noelle, in case either of those work for you

  Had a friend named Ariel who definitely had red hair.  She was cool, but you can't help think Disney at first. However, knew another Ariel who did not have red hair and did not think of mermaids.

  Darn Little Mermaid. And despite their screw up, Ariel (/AR-ee-?l/) and Arielle (/ar-ee-EL/)are still not pronounced the same.

   

  I agree with this entirely. Ariel does not look feminine to me. Arielle does.
