3rd Trimester

contraception after birth?

Need some suggestions ladies. I'm 36 weeks and this pregnancy (#2) has been a very long road. High-risk, cervical issues, weekend stays in the hospital. Needless to say I'm grateful I've made it this far, because Dr.'s didn't think I would, but I'm ready to get on birth control after this lil boy is born. I was on Mirena prior to conception, but there's been a lot of negative media about I don't know what to do. I had Mirena for 4 years with no problems. Would love your input or what you have decided on for yourself.

Re: contraception after birth?

  • I have Mirena now, and love it. Sure, there's negative side effects and some people have issues with insertion, but it works for most people.

  • I just used a low dose bc pill because I was nursing.  Worked great until I stopped taking it and my husband insisted that 'pull out and pray' would work for 6mo before we tried for #2.  Three weeks later #2 was on its way.....  ;)

I guess the moral is, don't use pull out and pray!  ;)

  • We did natural family planning after dd1 and dd2 it worked great until I went on depo and we thought we were safe. Well ds is on his way! I will be having my tubes tied after he is born. We are defiantly done

  • I'm thinking of getting Mirena again, but have to talk to my OB.  I'm up for 1 more despite how high risk my pregnancy has been.  DH is 100% sure that he doesn't want a 3rd....at least not now ;). I'm planning to BF, so we'll need to figure out what works best.  It may be good ol condoms for a bit.

  • I went back on the pill 6 weeks after my first. I'm considering either an IUD or Essure after this one because I am DONE after this one. Good luck to you

  • I'm getting a Mirena to cover until H gets the big V.

    Yup! Same here
  • I guess our curse is also our blessing. DH has a developmental issue that led to his boys not being able to make it out without surgery so I technically don't need it but will likely look into a low dose pill because it helps regulate everything for me.

  • There's a lot of negative media about ALL birth control right now. Every time you turn around, something else is being bashed and sued. Honestly, if Mirena worked for you the first time, chances are you'll love it again. I didn't like mine at all, but I'm apparently really sensitive to artificial hormones, because every hormonal method I've tried has given me the same side effects. If I were in your situation and it had worked out for me, I'd definitely get it again. I loved not having to worry about refills and remembering pills.

  • Mirena. Had it in between last two pregnancies and it worked well for me. We are done but DH not on the V bandwagon (yet!) so it's the best option for now...
