notice time for shower invites?

So how much notice time do you think guests need for shower invites? I only ask because my mom is throwing my first shower next weekend and has still not sent out the invites yet. She keeps getting distracted. I'm worried that we won't have hardly anyone who comes because it's father's day weekend and they'll be making plans already. It just frustrates me that she waits so long. Grrr.

Re: notice time for shower invites?

  • I would say the same for anything else like that, so usually 2-4 weeks, depending on if you have out of town guests.  I'd probably tell her to get on the phone and start calling people!

  • My  girlfriends throwing the shower sent out a " save the date", and invites will go out 4 weeks before...everyone is local...

  • It's common in my family to give 4 wks notice, especially in the summer months.

  • 3 weeks. Can you push the date back? I hate for you to miss out on all the love if people can't attend due to short notice and the fact it's on a holiday.

  • Usually 1 to 2 months before. Especially since summer you have weddings, graduations, and other showers too and vacations... People make plans in advance during summer. My shower is June 30th and my invites went out May 18th.

  • What? Your shower is next weekend and the invites aren't out yet?! For a shower, like any other RSVPing event, the invites should go out 4-6 weeks in advance, with more notice for people that need to travel.

Yeah I too would be worried that I wouldn't have much of a turnout, unless you are only inviting super close family/friends. She needs to get them out today or you need to go over to her house and mail them for her. Tacky, maybe? but it's not like anyone will know it was you who actually put them in the mailbox.

  • Yeah, that's about what I figured too, about 34 weeks notice. she talked about it at 3 weeks out and said she was planning to do it that week. Then it kept getting pushed back and this past Saturday was her deadline for herself. Today she said ' working on invitations today, hopefully get them out in the morning'. gah. shower is in 10 days. Everyone is local, and mostly family, but still. it's summer. people make plans.

  • That's very short notice. I would be annoyed if I got an invite to an event just over a week away, especially on a summer weekend. Can she email and/or call people right now to save the date?

  • eeep. I would be pissed if I got an invitation with such short notice.

Unfortunately, I can't push it back. We had to do it now bc that weekend is when my doc had told me to stop traveling more than an hour from here. My family is all 3 hours away.

  • I think my hostesses are giving the guests a month notice because of the summer months. I mean this nicely but as a guest if I got an invitation the same week as the shower I would assume that I was a B list guest and probably decline. It's really short notice for even local people, is there any way it can be pushed back? It sounds like your mom really dropped the ball on this one. I'm sorry.
  • Yeah, she did drop the ball here. And what bothers me now too is that my hormones translate frustration into crying. So I'm at work crying bc I'm frustrated with her and if no one shows up at the shower, that'll frustrate me too and I don't want to cry that day either. I wish we could push it back a few weeks.

  • My mom sent the invites out last week, giving about 6 weeks notice. I feel like people's schedules fill up very quickly in the summer so advance notice is important. Is there any way she can push it back a few weeks? especially since it is Father's Day weekend. Many people may already have plans.

  • I'd send an email to your friends in the area and give them the heads up that there's an invitation in the mail but it'll be next weekend.
  • My sister already sent out all the invites and it's 6 weeks before the shower date

I'd like to do this, but it felt kind of weird coming from me. Do you really think it's ok? I'll get a message out on Facebook now to family members.

  • Yes, I would say the sooner the better, especially in the summer. Not only are people busy, but you need time to go get a gift. Even more time if you have to order it online

I would do it for the people that you'd be upset if they couldn't make it, or maybe if you have a sister/ or a close friend you can have her send it out.  I personally wouldn't be offended if a close friend sent me a heads up

  • Ok thanks. I just sent a quick message in FB to some family members to let them know invites should be out tomorrow, but just in case, save the date for June 15 for a shower at my mom's house. it feels a little gift grabbyto me, but mostly, I just want people to come enjoy. I rarely see my extended family because I live 3 hours away, So want to see them there bc I won't be able to go back home until after baby is here.

Are your mom and my sister the same person? My shower is also June 15 and my sister/hostess was working on invitations this past weekend and didn't mail them until yesterday. At least I hope she did... I'm traveling 3 hours for my shower, too, and this is the only weekend we can do it before it's too late for me to want to drive 3 hours for it.

We must be related. I've been talking to her about these things for weeks now trying to subtly tell her she needs to get them out. If I lived closer, I'd have been in her face about them earlier.

  • Your shower is next weekend and she hasn't sent out invites??  I'd agree with PP and she better start emailing and calling because invites will barely get mailed in time!

I hope you still get a good showing to celebrate your LO!

  • My shower is June 29 and my mom is sending out invites this week.  i even thought that was a little short notice but it just kind of crept up on us!
  • At least a month's notice is reasonable. My shower isn't until August, but my MIL sent Save the dates a couple weeks ago since organizing people in summer can be hard with vacations/weddings/etc.
