Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Do you wake baby to feed?

Up until now I have been waking baby from naps to feed every 3 hours (he is 19 weeks). Thinking of just letting him nap until he wakes up but nervous b/c by waking him I insure that he eats every three hours and has enough time to digest before next meal. Does anyone else still wake baby to feed? Or if you don't, are the times between feedings sometimes 2 hours, sometimes 3 or 4 depending on how long they sleep?

Re: Do you wake baby to feed?

  • The only time I wake my LO to eat is at 5 AM Monday ? Friday. I work and need time to get ready and this assures me he won?t need me from 5:30 AM ? 6:30 AM. Otherwise he will go about 3 hours between feedings but it can vary anywhere from 2-6 hours.

  • Oh God, I stopped that as soon as my LO was maintaining weight. Like definitely by the time she was a month old. There really is no need to do that at 19 wks unless your pedi told you to because of weight issues or what have you.

Come to think of it though, my LO doesn't nap for 3 hours ever. She has 3 thirty to hour and a half naps a day.

  • No. I've always been told you no longer need to wake a baby to feed once they've regained their birth weight. I actually never had to wake my kids to feed because that young they woke up by 3 hours on their own.

  • I have stopped waking her to feed at about 2.5 months.

  • Nope, sleep is a precious thing in this noisy house. If he is hungry enough he'll wake.

  • Not since she passed her birth weight at 2 weeks. I BF, so I follow LOs lead. She eats each time she wakes up and as needed. In the evenings it can be 30 min apart, in the middle of the day if she's napping it can be more than 4h.

  • I never ever wake to feed, or keep track of how many hours in between bottles.

Your baby will wake up when hungry!!

  • I definitely wouldn't be waking to eat at this point, I thought it was pretty normal to stop waking once LO returns to birthweight in the first couple weeks.

DD goes between 2 to 4 hours between feedings around the clock, she'll only nap if nursing though so I have to "feed" her more often in the day to get her to sleep.

This, I'm surprised your doctor didn't tell you that you could stop once he met birth weight.

  • I just wanted to add that you are not doing anything wrong by offering him a bottle/breast every 3 hours.  As a general rule, it is just not necessary.

With my first children (33 weekers), we woke them every 3 hours around the clock for the first 9 months per doctor's orders.  With this LO, we are on the other side and can let him eat when he is hungry - be it 30 minutes or 6 hours.  For that reason alone, this LO is so much easier and I am well rested.

  • I'm going to go against the grain here and tell you that yes, I wake LO to feed if it's been longer that 3 hours since his last feeding.  But, only during the day.  He's not a super napper anyway, so I don't need to often.  But, he sleeps well at night and I'm worried that if I let him miss daytime feedings, he'll want to make up for them later.  So, he eats about every three hours about 5-6 times a day then sttn 10-12 hrs.  He's been doing this since 3 mos and in works for us.

Occasionally, I'll let him go a little longer, but that usually just pushes back bedtime.  I have found that if he eats less one day, he'll wake up earlier the next morning because he's hungry.

  • I also have to wake my little boy up to feed him! Always have! It started that I HAD to wake him every two hours around the clock because of jaundice when he was first born, then at 3 weeks we let him sleep but he was sleeping for 4-4 1/2 hours! I called the pedi, and they told us to wake him at 3 hours.

At 6 weeks I started waking him at 4 hours during the day (never at night) so that I could have some routine and at 7 weeks he started sleeping 6-7 hours straight at night.

Now at 13 weeks he still occasionally sleeps for almost 5 hours during the day and still doesn't wake up crying or acting hungry! Right now I try to wake him 'around' 4-4 1/2 hours just so we don't throw off the 9 hours he sleeps at night! :)

He has always wanted more to do with sleeping then eating!
