When do kids no longer need a safety rail?

Mobile Bumpies:  When do kids no longer need a safety rail?

Is that what it's called?  Anyway, the rail that keeps them from falling out of bed.  DS is currently in a crib converted toddler bed so it has a short (it covers maybe 1/3 of the front of the bed) safety rail.  He has a new bed coming this week and I'm wondering if we need a rail for it or not.  He's 3.  He seems to stay put pretty well when he sleeps so I'm thinking he doesn't need one, but was wondering what everyone else thinks on this topic.

The bed was originally on floor now 6 inches off ground so not a big drip.

I had thought about maybe just putting the mattress and boxspring right on the floor for the first few days to a week to make sure he's okay.  I figure it wouldn't be as far of a fall without a frame.

I think he'll be fine.  MH was the one who was a little skeptical so I said I'd ask around :)

  • We still use one. My ds is on a top bunk so they're just there while dd is on the bottom bunk with a full sized rail. We will stop using one when she stops rolling so much. I don't think it's weird to not use one if your kid isn't all over the place when they sleep at any age.

  • We never used them. DD2 fell out once. I don't think DD1 ever fell out. I found her on the floor a few times, but I I think she chose to be there. :)

  • My friends child kept rolling off the bed. She used a pool noodle under the sheet. It worked great.

  • DD is 2.5 and we use a bed rail.  She is a wild sleeper.  I'm thinking about trying the pool noodle under the fitted sheet.  Her bed is pretty high so it makes me nervous.

  • The pool noodle is a great idea. I searched for something to use on DD2's bunk bed, but gave up and let her sleep without. Turned out fine, but I definitely would have tried the noodle.

Us either x3.  All our girls were in a twin bed by 26 months.

  • We never used one. I am actually surprised DS never fell out he rolls all over.
  • DS used one until 4.5 (he no longer needed it but wouldn't let me remove it). I am doing the pool noodle for dd. it does work great.

  • We never used one for either kid.  Both fell out of bed a couple of times when they first moved to the twin bed.  Their beds aren't super high, so it wasn't a big deal.

  • My kids never had one and they moved to a bed at 16 and 17 months.
