birth control ? while bfing and sex

First of all, a horrifying post-partum sex story for you.  :)  DH and I finally (yep, 14 weeks in...) DTD.  We decided we'd just use condoms for now because we don't want another kid and eventually he'll probably get a vasectomy.  Wellll... the deed itself went fine.  Good thing about waiting so long is I'm all healed up!  BUT the condom ripped down the side and slid off (we noticed, so hopefully no surprise babies!) and was STUCK up there.  Talk about total embarrassment.  Horrible.  I know we've been doing "it" for ten years now, but geez, never had that one happen.  I am allergic to latex, so we use these terrible non-latex condoms that tend to rip.  This TMI story leads up to this question!  Who has used hormonal birth control pills while breastfeeding? (Not the mini-pill.  I just flat out can't remember to take it within the same half-hour every day.)  Did you notice a decrease in your milk supply?  What brand did you use?  Have any of you ever had the implant that goes in your arm?  Obviously, condoms aren't working for us!  And breastfeeding kept away my period for 19 months with Nate, but 12 weeks in and I already have it back with Caleb.

  • That is crazy that you got your period. I'm still waiting for mine and I'm not BF.

If you think you're done, then maybe consider an IUD? I have the Paraguard and I love it so far.

  • I had implanon in my arm, but I wasn't nursing at the time. I looooved it. I didn't get periods at all and loved that I didn't have to even think about it.

Totally unhappy about it! :)  I didn't have one at all when bfing Nate (19 months!) and got pregnant on purpose without ever having had it!  12 weeks pp and bam!  Period!  I'm going with it being God's way of helping us prevent having an "oops" baby. :)

IUD's terrify me.  My sister had one that perforated through her uterus and caused such terrible scaring that she can never have a second child. :(   I know that's not the norm at all and an unusual side effect, but eek!  And I like that with pills if I have side effects I don't like, it's as easy as not taking another one.

I see your concerns about an IUD but I have a Mirena and love it.  It was totally free too.

  • We are still using condoms and bfing. I'm still waiting for AF to show up after 2....
My friend had the implant in her arm and EP'd for a year and ha no problems with supply. I too know 2 friends of mine who's IUDs migrated, one perforated the uterus and she had surgery the other apparently had been inserted wrong or something but it had lodged wrongly in the uterine wall but hasn't perfed yet so hers they were able to remove in office. So needless to say I'm a bit freaked out over them too even though many people have them without difficulty.
Good luck! We are crossing fingers but if 3 comes before we plan then we will be done :

If you don't want to take the mini pill then I don't think you should take any type of pills if you want to continue breastfeeding.

What about Nuva Ring? I never tried it but that seems like an easier to remember birth control and less intimidating than an IUD or implant.
