UO bumpers after 6 months

We are getting bedding for nursery and debating on getting bumper for when he gets around 6 months or older. I've read a lot about them but would be interested in hearing you alls perspective in this.

  • No, we would do a bumper just to keep his limbs from getting stuck in the cracks.

    To me I don't even really think they are cute. nbsp;They just look stuffy and old fashioned and probably collect dust mites. lol. nbsp;We had the mesh ones from day one so he didn't get any arms or legs stuck. nbsp;I was happy with those for function. nbsp;Anyway, I feel like its not worth the risk if its for a decorative standpoint.nbsp;

    That. And I've seen kids use them as a step once they can stand holding the railing, and fall over the side. Too many times.
  • Same- I don't like the way way the look. It's too match matchy for me. I thought about getting a breathable mesh bumper if down the road this kid decides to get his arms and legs all tangled in the crib but for now i'd rather be safe than sorry and avoid it if possible.
  • Haha, love it Redhead! Good point. If he keeps sticking legs in cracks maybe he'll learn not too! I never thought if he standing on the bumper. That scares me more than an arm stuck.
  • We use the breathable ones after 6 months or so. It gives just enough padding so the baby doesn't hurt themselves if the bonk their head on crib while thrashing around.

  • It's at that time that they start to use the bumpers to stand up on.  For that reason, we didn't use one at that time - no need to help him be taller in the crib.  Before that, we used the breathable bumper from about 4-6 months when LO#1 started getting legs stuck between the slats.

  • We did the mesh bumper at around 4 months when DD started rolling around just plain freaking out. DD would scream blood murder for no reason (sometimes an arm would be stuck but most of the time not). As soon as we put the bumpers on, she calmed down. I think they made her space feel smaller and saver. When she started pulling herself up, I pulled the bumpers down so only 2-3 inches stuck up above the mattress for a pacifier catch. If you have the crib that converts to a toddler bed, I'd consider using the decorative ones then, since you could actually use the quilt that comes in the sets too.

    DS has slept in his crib since 6 months and we have the regular old bumpers in his crib. We haven't had a problem with him standing on them or crawling out.

    Why are parents so obsessed about preventing this? It's no big deal. Baby cries, you unstick their leg, they go back to sleep. It happened to DS maybe four times total before he learned not to stick his legs between the slats.

    This. DS got stuck once so far in 15 months. Big deal he wasn't hurt. He bangs his head about 400 times a day falling down. Part of being a baby.

    Worried about binkys falling out? Put like four in the crib at a time.

    Bumpers are a strangulation hazard, mesh or not. Let alone old fashion and ugly looking. And they must hold tons of allergens.
  • I used bumpers for all three of our girls and never once had a problem with them climbing on them or falling out if bed. Plus, they are washable. It's not like you don't ever clean them.

  • We had a breathable mesh bumper on LO's crib the entire time she was in it, from 3 months on.

    I agree. This was just not even a thing for us. Besides the SIDS risk, I have bad allergies and didn't want to have one more thing that could collect dust. We don't use bumpers at all. My kid was a pretty aggressive sleeper too and he never got hurt from thrashing up against the cribs either

    I did not know about these! DS used the regular old bumpers until he was in a toddler bed. We never had an issue, but I liked them for when he'd pushed his head up against the rails. But if they have mesh ones, I'd rather use those!
