"Failure to Thrive" babies, anyone?

Pedi just Dxed the twins as failure to thrive this afternoon when they fell off the charts for weight. Their height and head gains were good, and they did gain weight, just not that much from their 2 month appt.

Anyone else in my boat? What was your situation?

TIA!

  • I can't give you any advice, but there was a post about a week or so ago about another MoM in regards to her boys and I'm quite sure it was the same "failure to thrive" hopefully she'll be able to give you some advice.

  • Do they have any idea why they aren't gaining weight?  Reflux?  Are they not taking enough volume?  Do you track how much they drink each day?  Are they sleeping enough?  Did they continue their growth curve, or just not gain enough in your doctors opinion?  Are you supplementing with higher calorie formula?

DD has refulx, and it's controlled with Prevacid. I BF them, 6-7X a day each and they seem content till the next feed. They sleep well, about 9hrs at night and wake to eat, then go back to sleep.

They are still on their own growth curve, steadly gaining, but not enough for the Dr. She says they are <1% in weight. Last appt they were 3%, so they are loosing in the percentile.

When I asked about supplimenting, she said NOT to use the EMB that I have in the fridge/freezer but to use just regular formula. I asked about a higher calorie formula and she said to just use regular : /  Doesn't sound right to me, you would think that you would want MORE calories per oz (?!?!).

When I offer them a bottle of EMB they take about 0.5oz and then refuse any more, so I don't know how they would handle formula

  • With my little girl who had troubles with weight I was told by the dietician to add the formula mix (at regular mixing amounts) into my EMB (not water) -- this might be a GREAT trick :)

I don't really know how to edit in a quoted area but regarding the higher calorie formula, I agree with the pp that you can concentrate the EMB with regular formula in a specific recipe.  I did this for one bottle a day for my DD's and BF the other feeds.  You would need to see a registered dietitian to get the recipe (how much powdered formula to add to how much EMB).  Are you being followed by GI?  Sometimes the GI doctors have registered dieticians in their dept if it is a large clinic.

  • Have you had your milk tested?  Are they eating enough that they are getting the high fat milk?  And I agree, add formula to breastmilk, that will fortify it.

I haven't had my milk tested, I don't know where to get that done : /

Their nursing sessions last 17-22 minutes on average, but sometimes they go longer (never shorter). I do compressions to help with the fat content.

I'm going to ask the Pedi to find out how much formula to add to the BM. THANKS!

  • Sorry for the late reply but did your pediatrician say anything about introducing solids? When my DS who is almost three was a baby they said to introduce around six months, we started at fice months because he was ready. The twins had really bad reflux and at their four month appointment told us that introducing solids would be helpful with their reflux and the new recommendation was 4-6 months. I started and for the first two weeks it was them learning to eat (a lot slower than my son) but they got it. Sorry for rambling but solids might help with them gaining weight. I obly did rice cereal for a couple of days and switched to sweet potatoes to give them more motivation to eat. Good luck
