MIL wants to buy us a used BOB

What should I know/ask?

I read baby bargains and registered for a city mini. She wants to buy us this instead if what I registered for.

Re: MIL wants to buy us a used BOB

  • What model BOB is she wanting to buy? Do you need a running/jogging stroller?

I know up in your area Bobs are hot on craigslist so be prepared to have many people wanting the same one.  Or maybe she knows someone with a Bob they are selling?  You will want to know what year it is, make sure its in good condition and the fabric is fairly clean.  Everything should be in working order.  If it is need of a lot of repairs you are better off buying new IMO.  Also if you want to use it with a carseat, find out if there is an adapter available for the carseat you plan to use.

IMO I would get the city mini AND a Bob if you plan on exercising with LO.  If you just plan on doing light walking on paved sidewalks a BOB isn't necessary.   Its a large stroller and not ideal for shopping in stores.  And the basket sucks.  I'm not sure about the city mini basket.

  • We actually just got the new Bob Motion stroller. It's super comparable to the City Mini GT and Britax B Agile. It actually does not require an adapter for the Britax B Safe car seat (and maybe other Britax car seats).

Does she just love the Bob brand? Perhaps a new Bob Motion is a good compromise. Word to the wise, Buy Buy Baby sells the Bob Motion and you can use the 20% coupons from them or Bed, Bath and Beyond. Saved us like $70!

  • She knows someone who is selling it used.

We won't be running with the baby, just walking, and 90 percent on pavement.

It isn't what I thought we needed, but I don't know what to say or do.

Mil told me via text that she wants to buy us our stroller, I said thank you and she said she would check my registry. A few days later she asked dh about buying us a used BOB. I wasn't there. He said we would think about it. I just didn't do that much research on them.

I will reread what baby bargains says about them. I just wish she would buy us what we registered for. Oh well.

  • YOU can still buy the City Mini.  That used BOB probably costs more than a brand new City Mini.

Oh yes. I will leave it on the registry and we may still buy it. I don't have a lot of large ticket items on there, so it is possible that someone or a group may still buy it too.

  • My SIL and her husband have a BOB Revolution and it is a big, bulky, heavy stroller.  We own a City Mini and use it for walking on paved sidewalks and trails and it's fantastic - light weight, maneuvers wells, and is comfortable for baby.

I think a BOB would be overkill for the kind of use you're describing. Not to mention that the City Mini can be used from birth without a car seat adapter because of its nearly-flat recline.

  • I would be honest if it isn't what you want. Otherwise you could always sell it on Craigslist.

Just like any other gift that doesn't work out. Gifts are not mandatory to keep. I have no problem donating or selling gifts. I don't have room for things I don't use. "Hey mil isn't it great I was able to use money from bob to buy x. It really didn't work for us because it was too big." There is no point in keeping something around that you don't use and sells well second hand.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think we could do that. We will have to keep it around for a while if she buys it.

  • I have both a CM and a BOB. I love the BOB for jogging but I could never use it as my everyday stroller. If you're not planning on jogging I'd just thank your MIL for the offer but say that the CM is a better stroller for your needs, and probably less expensive too.

  • I love my BOB.  If I didn't run though it would be a HUGE waste, not to mention it is HUGE to store and you really don't want to tote this around to the stores, drag it in and out of your car, etc.

Be honest with your MIL: "MIL, we had a chance to look in to the BOB and while it looks amazing, and we are so appreciative of your offer to splurge on this for us, we just don't think it will suit our needs.  It is a stroller that is intended for serious runners and it is bulky and heavy; we need something a little easier to transport in our car.  We still think the City Mini will meet our needs best."
