HURT MY BACK!!! Its BAD! What can I take/do?!

I did not lift anything heavy....bent over to pick up a small stack of CD's and move them and suddenly had a knife in my back, or so it feels. It is not getting better, I laid down for a minute and i couldnt even move to my side without crying from the pain. Finally worked my way out after much effort.....cant sit, can't lay, can't stand....thinking bout going to ER but idk if they can even do anything for me!!!
My mom offered muscle relaxers....I doubt i can take those....she said she has motrin 800....probably cant take that either......I'm in so much pain!~!!!! Should I just go to ER?

Re: HURT MY BACK!!! Its BAD! What can I take/do?!

  • Call  your regular doctor to get an appointment. Let them know you are pregnant. They can refer you to an orthopedic or chiropractor for physical therapy or whatever else you need.

You can take tylenol in the meantime and sit in a warm bath if you can. Even standing in a warm shower with it on your back can help.

I suffer chronic back pain due to other injuries. Often there is nothing you can do but consult your doctors, get safe meds and wait for it to heal or get some good physical therapy. I know its painful and miserable, but do your best to tough it out until you can see your doctor.

  • I just hate not being able to really do anything about it right now other than suffer. I sure as heck hope I cam sleep tonight. If its still bad in the morning I'll probably go to urgent care, its way faster than ER. And hopefully I can get a referral to some kind of chiropractor or something. I've heard that most insurances cover chiro while pregnant but.....idk if medicaid does. If it doesnt, i'm totally screwed. i cannot afford to pay to see a chiro.
  • Is the pain going down into your legs or toes at all? If so, it very well may be a herniated disc, but the only way to know that is to get an MRI. I have severe back issues and was approved to take Flexeril, which is a muscle relaxer, after I hit 12 weeks. I dont suggest you go to the ER either. The only thing they could do is give you an IV of pain medication which they more than likely wouldnt do without an MRI and because you are pregnant. Unfortunately the only thing you can do is wait it out. If it is a disc issue, it may take several days before you can walk again without pain. I suggest making an appt with your family Dr and letting them take it from there. Also, I wouldnt normally ever suggest this, but I know how excrutiating back pain and injuries can be, so if your mom has Flexeril either call your OBs emergency line and ask if you can take it OR look up the statistics of the drug online and see if its something you would becomfortable taking without your Drs approval. Hope you feel better!!!!

The ER isn't going to be able to do much. It's not an emergency. Please don't clog the ER with something like this. It's not fair to those that have REAL emergencies. I get you are in pain but please, you can wait.

I got a groupon for a chiro. I went a few weeks back with sciatica pain for the first time ever. I felt soooo much better within 20 minutes.

Tylenol, my OB said 3000mg is the max per day for pregnant women. And ice it 10 minutes per hour. BTW, NO MOTRIN! If anything the doctor can give you some pain killers you can take while knocked up :)

     good luck!

This. An ER visit or urgent care isn't gonna help much. They'll probably give you a narcotic that's ok to take. Or, follow the advice of the pp and see if that helps. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Sorry you are in pain.  No Motrin.  Tylenol is the only thing my docs have approved.  Hope you get some relief soon.

  • Definitely no motrin/advil/ibuproren and no muscle relaxers.  I have a lot of back pain, due to a back fracture in my early 20's and 16 years of nursing.  Try a prenatal massage if you are able to get on the table or have your partner/husband massage you if you have one.  If it's not a massage therapist giving the massage, I'd avoid deep massage or a lot of pressure.  Try Ice & you can alternate with mild heat.  Tylenol (which won't do much).  If you really are in severe pain, it's ok to go to the ER.  Severe pain is a valid reason to be seen in the ER, but they probably won't want to give you much.  I would only take a muscle relaxer or narcotic if I was in severe pain & unable to stand it and then only if it's approved by an OB.  Ice really can make a big difference for me, I can't wait for the baby to be out, so I can take my beloved motrin again.  Hope you feel better

  • As others have said, you might try calling your OB's after hours number for some advice.  I damaged my cornea around 16 weeks and it was the most awful pain ever.  Labor didn't even seem as bad.  My OB gave me vicodin b/c Tylenol was a joke.  It took the edge off enough until the eye healed.  Just throwing it out there that there are stronger pain relievers they can prescribe to pg women.
