"Boy" names for girls

What is everyone's thoughts? Our thoughts for a girl are Tyler Blair, calling her Tyler. These are mine and my husbands middle names, and Blair is a family name of mine. I think Tyler works for a girl and friends and family seem to agree but I'm not sure if anyone is holding back opinions!!!! :

  • I'd say that your friends and family are just being nice. Tyler does not work on a girl. I could maybe see Blair as first name?

  • I understand wanting to do family names.  I would do Blair Tyler if you must do both.  Tyler is a boy's name.  Every class list, everyone will always think she's a boy.  My sister is a Kasey.  That one has pretty much gone to the girls by now, and she still gets mail addressed to Mr. Kasey lastname.

  • Well my name is Alex and I have a friend named Kyle and know many other girls with names that are traditional boy names. We are in Georgia maybe it's more common here rather than other places. Appreciate the input though :
  • Go for it. My name is Teddi Lee, I was the first grandbaby so I was named after my paternal granddad, Ted Lee. My sister was named after our uncle Rick, she's named Rikki. One of my girlfriends is named Ryan. All three of us love our names and they are all different without being weird. :0)
  • Woo hoo! Thank you!!!!! Lol you must be from the south too? :

My thoughts on boy's names for girls: No.  NO.  Good god, NO.

Tyler on a girl is just no.

    This.

I absolutely loathe them and find the very annoying. I just don't get why it is so acceptable by some. Why is it so appealing to give your daughter a masculine name? Ugh.

Would you name your son Elizabeth?

Disclaimer: the above sentiments do not include longstanding unisex names such as Frances vs. Francis, etc.

    yes! Please don't do it!

  • She will always be thought of as a boy, and I can see that being a problem as she gets older. Taylor *might* work.

One of DH's friends named their daughter Ryan and I can't stand it

ETA: Aaaand of course, you're going to agree with the one person who thinks it's a good idea...Teddi and Rikki are very different from naming a girl Ted or Rick/Richard.

  • It's not my style, I like feminine names for girls, but most importantly you and your husband should like the name.  If her name is Tyler, she will have to often clarify that she is a girl not boy though, so that's something she'll have to get used to - and I'm sure she would.

However, for what it's worth, I really like Blair as a first name much better.  Blair is actually a unisex name.  I know both women and men with the name.  So you can get your boy name without it seeming as out of left field as Tyler.

  • I also said that I appreciated everyone's comments not just agreeing with the person who agreed with me.
  • I just don't get it! There is nothing cute about a little girl, let alone, a grown woman, with a boys name. It's not cute. It's not unique. It's stupid.

Not sure if I have to say this part but, just to be clear, Tyler does not belong on a girl.

  • I have a funny feeling I would hate all of your name choices too. There is a difference is a simple, no not my style, and the way you all have responded. I don't and didn't expect everyone to agree and I was certainly open to disagreement that is why I posted this. But all of your comments are unbelievable! I'm going to chalk it up to hormones or ignorance. But again, thanks for your input, just not the way you all have chosen your words.
  • I do not like it at all.

I do like some "unisex" names, but Tyler is not one of them. Also if you are going to use a boy name on a girl I would go very feminine with the mn.

I do not like boy names on girls. It makes me feel sad for the girls.

Tyler for a girl is not good.

ETA: I will also say that I dislike the idea that it is somehow cute or uncommon. It's tacky and trendy. Some people also seem to think it makes the girl sound "stronger or more powerful". It does not. I think it also sends a message that masculine is better than feminine.

No my dear, it is you that is the ignorant one. And just a little tip, maybe you should know what a word means before you use it.
  • AGAIN I am not upset at the disagreement on the name choice. i would not have posted this if i thought everyone would agree. it's the way everyone has stated it! It's easy to say no, not my style don't think I like that. Rather than some of the ways that have been chosen to say that you don't like it.

This.  So many people say they think boy names on girls are cute or sound strong, but almost nobody says, "I like girl names on boys because they're cute and they sound sensitive."  Why is that?  Don't you think that sends kind of a messed up message to both boys and girls?

You asked for people's thoughts. They gave them to you. What's so bad about that? No one was rude; they were blunt. Those are not the same things.

When I see that name, my thoughts are not, "No, that's not my style, I don't think I like that." Rather, my thoughts are, "Oh, my goodness, not another one. Leave the boy names alone!" If I were to meet a girl with the name Tyler, sure, after getting to know her, maybe I wouldn't think anything of it, but at first, I'd sure be thinking, "Tyler? I guess her parents wanted a boy."

Honestly the opinions you get here are what people are going to say to you IRL either behind your back or to your face.  Putting a common boy name on a girl is something she will deal with her whole life.  Always mistaken for a male, a lot of people asking her to repeat her name to make sure they heard it right etc.   Calling our opinions ignorant is ridiculous considering you are just upset not many people like your name choices.

This. Why would you just want everyone to say "no" and not explain their reasonings? I think giving a girl a boy's name is far more ignorant and ridiculous than us telling you that it's a silly idea.

  • i am one for liking boy names on girls *shoot me now* i know.. but i think there is a difference between naming a girl a "unisex" boy name and naming a girl a obvious boy name. i agree with everyone else who says Blair Tyler. i also think if you are going to like a unisex name (not full out boy name) you should add on a very feminine middle name.

what im talking about with unisex are: Morgan, Avery, Arden, Cameron, Casey. all technically boy names but have some sort of fem touch to them (i know not everyone will agree with me). naming a girl Tyler IMO is like naming a girl Bob or Fred

  • I love boy names on girls. Both myself and DD have one.

I knew at least one Tyler (girl) growing up, maybe 2.  I think it is fine for a girl and I particularly like the family significance.

  • I'm using a boy name as part of a double name. That being said, I don't like Tyler for a girl. If you to use it, I would pair it with something much more feminine than Blair.
  • While I do like a few boy names for girls (like Sawyer, for example) I do not think that Tyler works.  At all.

Someone naming their daughter a boy name doesn't make the name unisex. It just makes the parents idiots.
