Crib Transition WWYD?

DD has a 4 in 1 crib, so I've been planning on buying a second convertible crib for LO2.  That way each kid keeps their same bed as they transition.

SO brought up yesterday that we should just put DD's crib in LO2's room and buy a toddler bed for her.  I'm not 100% against this idea, but I'm just not sure she's ready.  That being said, I don't know what "ready" would look like.  She does not try to get out, she sleeps well in there, etc.  I can see a toddler bed being a challenge, because I'm sure she wouldn't stay in it at first and I'm not sure I want to deal with lying down with her while I'm this huge.

Would we also have to buy a baby gate to make sure she couldn't access the rest of the house is she woke at night, or is it okay to completely close her door and use door knob covers?

Another option could be to buy the toddler bed and not set it up until baby is ready to move from the bassinet in our room to their room.  DD will be 2 and a bit then so could be more ready.

All of this furniture is on sale at Sears until June 5th so I want to get it while the getting is good!  WWYD?

Re: Crib Transition WWYD?

  • If I were you, I would leave well enough alone. I would leave LO1 in her crib until she becomes Houdini and can escape. Enough will be changing in her life without messing with her sleep. Get the 2nd crib from Sears, even if you change your mind both kids will need a bed/crib.

  • I refuse to move Lincoln from his crib until he gives me not other option.

  • We were in a similar situation with our furniture and LO2 expected, plus DD started hopping out of the crib.  So we transitioned to a twin bed several months back.  It took a LONG time (like 4-6 weeks!) and a LOT of time laying with her in the bed....so since you're already 34 weeks, I don't know if I'd make that choice this close to LO2 arriving.  Especially since your DD is not climbing out of the crib yet.

If I were in your situation, I'd probably buy the toddler bed, and wait to transition later when LO2 is ready to move out of the bassinet.  I would not buy a second crib, but that's just me.

  • Thanks for the input ladies.I'm definitely not going to transition DD to a bed now. That can wait until she's settled into the big sister role.

Kimbus, I like the idea of skipping the toddler bed and just getting a twin with a safety rail.  The crib we're looking at is only about $100 more than the toddler bed, so if we go that route, at least we know that the crib will transition to a day bed, and then parts can be used with a double frame.  I'm all about being frugal too!
