Caffeine .. Is anyone drinking any?

If you are partaking in caffeine or have in a past pregnancy how much per day? I have about a half a cup of coffee that is mostly FF creamer in the morning and a coke for lunch. I can't get a good answer on its proven negative effects online. Dr seemed ok with my intake so I was just curious what you ladies do?? I have never been a huge soda drinker but I swear coke is the only thing I crave!!

Re: Caffeine .. Is anyone drinking any?

  • The recommendation is to minimize caffeine intake to 200-300 mg per day. Since your OB is not concerned with your intake, I would trust his/her judgment.

I either have one cup of coffee or a glass of  iced tea/hot tea per day.

  • I have a cup of tea every morning.. If I don't then I get severe migraines unfortunately. I think you are able to have 200mg's a day.. Correct me if I'm wrong someone.. I just took a shot at it. I will sometimes have a drink or so of something else in the day.. Just depends.

I eat copious amounts of chocolate and that probably wont stop, however I drink 1 cup of coffee every other day, because I like the taste. The only reason I limit myself is because I don't want to drink coffee while nursing a newborn, no study or reason why other than I just don't want my newb to have caffeine.

  • I drink hot tea every morning and sometimes have iced tea in the afternoon.
  • I probably have a coke about every other day.  I've never been a coffee drinker so that's not an issue for me.  You could consider caffeine free coke, but I don't think your caffeine intake sounds bad.  Everybody is probably getting caffeine in some form even if it's minor (e.g., chocolate).

  • I drank a cup or two before pregnancy. I definitely needed it in the morning. However, I completely abstained from it during the first trimester. Despite being strict about the food rules, coffee is one thing that I occasionally have. It hasn't been every day or even every week. Sometimes I just need a half of cup because I had a horrible night sleep the night before.

My doctor allows me up to 200-300mg of caffeine a day but that includes the caffeine in chocolate, iced tea, etc.

If your doctor isn't concerned about your intake, than I wouldn't be.

P.S. I am not sure if you like Starbucks but I get their baby size (small pike) when I do buy some coffee. It is not on the menu so you have to ask for the size. But It is so cute!!

  • No coffee (sadly I can't stomach it, as much as I'd LOVE a giant cup).  But I've also been craving cokes so I do occasionally have one or two.  As mentioned the recommendation is no more than 200-300 mg, I've seen both.  So I think you're safe.

  • I've actually been enjyoing the taste of coffee finally. I'll have one over ice every now and then. Mainly because I forget to make it somedays.

    haha!

Now, caffeine I did consume on a daily basis before getting pregnant. Personally, I either have a cup of black coffee in the morning or a cola in the afternoon. Some days I don't need it. Today is not one of those days.

ETA: The first trimester, I couldn't stand the smell of coffee. So caffeine was out until about week 12.

For children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So, quiet down cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."
  • Up until a few weeks ago I would have 1 can of coke a day, but I was told to cut down on my sugar intake (slightly high fluid), so I have dialed it back to 3 (or less) per week.

  • I was told 200mg is fine so I went and looked how much is in the items I sometimes like:
    Grande mocha/latte from Starbucks 150mg
Grande black coffee from Starbucks 330mg
    12 oz Coke 35mg

Also sometime at Starbucks I'll do a half caf more than not these days so that is about 7590mg.
  • I have it on and off. I don't try to avoid it, but I minimize what I intake. Today I had a coffee with lots of milk (more like a latte than coffee), so I won't have anything else with too much caffeine. I've drank tea and have had chocolate or coke as well. I just don't do it all in one day.

I've stayed away since BFP but only. because even one cup of coffee gives me awful withdrawal headaches...so not worth it right now...
  • Initially, I tried to cut it out...until the withdrawal gave me headaches and my doc told me I should have my 1 small cup a day to get rid of them. I drink 1/2caf now and only 1 a day. Had a decaf cappuccino yesterday instead (only abt 30 mg caffeine) and was exhausted all day. You ladies who've given it up completely, I salute you, but I don't know how you do it.

  • I have a cup of Green Mountain half-caff in the mornings, which is 75 mg of caffeine. Not enough to worry about, but it gives me a boost and lets me continue my morning coffee ritual. Then if I have chocolate or a Diet Coke later in the day, I know I have room for it.

  • Thanks for the input ladies. I didn't feel like I was having to much but then I guess I never really compared my intake to others. But seriously craving coke?!? WTH! Can I get a worse craving?! 140 calories and it dosent even effect my hunger status! Bogus!
  • I do, about once or twice per week. Usually Dr. Pepper or Coke. I'm sure you're fine with the amount you have daily. I would do it, except I don't drink enough water, so I try to focus on that more than flavored drinks.

  • Most days I have one cup of coffee in the AM. Some days I feel sluggish around 3:00 so I'll have a little soda or a second cup of coffee but that doesn't happen often. I try to keep the caffeine intake to below 200mg a day, as is recommended.

    lol.

When I sat down with my offices OB coordinator she asked me how much caffeine I was drinking and I felt so guilty telling her that I've been drinking chocolate milk because I just can't stand regular milk white.  She nearly laughed at me and told me not to worry.

I don't drink coffee so this isn't a problem for me but I was an avid Coca-Cola drinker and I've pretty much stopped consuming soda.  Although I did cave and get a Coke Slurpee over the weekend!!

As long as you're under 200mg they say you're OK however, to be sure I've just done my best to stay away from it as much as possible (chocolate & chocolate milk however are a must for me!).

  • Oh my word I am at work with my hubby...and I just told him I want a coke. I haven't had one this whole pregnancy. I asked him to get one so I can have a sip. then I read this! You girls read my mind!!! I got one for myself. I don't have coffee caffinated tea haven't had chocolate all week. thanks ladies you made my day!!
  • Yeah. I drink it like normal. I did last preg too and no probs. if it worries you don't do it.
  • I have a cup of coffee most mornings.  If I go to Starbucks, I try to get half-caff, but at home I just make it full strength since we have a Kuereg.  I also have a coke and/or sweet tea on almost a daily basis.

I probably had the same (or maybe even more) caffeine during my last pregnancy. You can have up to like 250mg, which is a grande coffee from Starbucks. It's a lot of caffeine, so don't sweat a coke or two.

That's a great point! For every cup or coffee, I make sure to drink an equal amount of water in addition to my regular water intake so as not to get dehydrated. It's best to get at least a glass of water in your system in the morning before you drink coffee.

    Bwahahahahahaha.
     DS1 8/2011. DS2 8/2013.

  • I have a soda every 3 or 4 days. Pregnant or not.

I try to cut back on caffeine and sodas as a lifestyle choice, not because of pregnancy. I'm a recovering Pepsi addict and tried to cut out soda last year. I don't even allow dh to buy Pepsi or Wild Cherry Pepsi. He's only allowed to bring Mountain Dew or Code Red into this house, because I think they both taste like crap and won't touch them.

I have never liked coffee. And have never been able to fully kick my soda habit. So now I drink soda like some people drink alcohol. Only social situations like going out to eat. Otherwise I will go on a soda bender!

    Hahaha!! Awesome.

My OB said a cup of coffee a day is fine. I've been buying halfcaff and decaf and mixing them so I can have 2 [or maybe 3 if its the weekend and I'm just really craving coffee] cups. That's the only caffeine I drink each day.
  • I am currently enjoying a Mello Yellow.

When I had morning sickness, mellow yellow was the only thing that I could keep down, even water made me sick. I drink a couple cans a day.

If your OB isn't concerned, then don't be.

  • I have a weak cup daily. Last pregnancy I completely gave it up but now with having a toddler that's just not happening..
  • Yep, ever since my nausea went away around 11 or 12 weeks, I have been back on my normal 12 ounces on my way to work.  Coffee

  • When I could stand the smell of it again I started to have a cup a day.  But I noticed that I was crashing hard in the afternoon; so I have switched to decaf (most days) and noticed a huge difference.  I can usually get through the 2pm crash without feeling tired at all.

But I have been craving coke like NO OTHER.  So I still drink that!
