1st Trimester

Low TSH

hey ladies,

i had my first dr's appt last week and everything looked great! However my drs office called today to say that my TSH level was low (she didn't give a #).

She said they aren't concerned and will just re test at my next appt in a month. So of course, I went to the dreaded google to do some research and am finding mixed information. Have any of you had a similar experience and have any calming words?!

Re: Low TSH

  • I have hypothyroid and my TSH was high, 3.4, the month before I got pregnant. The month I started thyroid medicine is when I finally got my bfp and also when my TSH returned to normal. They didnt tell me what number it was at, just that it was "normal". I googled also when I was dealing with it, and if I remember right, low is better than high?? If they aren't super worried about it, I would try my hardest not to worry either. I know it can be hard to do though as I'm now dealing with low progesterone. If its still low after your next appt I bet they can give you something for it, I know mine was fixed really fast!

It could have been a fluke. Your TSH can fluctuate depending on several factors. This is why they have a normal range.

When they retest, if it is still off they will just put you on meds to regulate it. The meds are totally safe and it's far better to have a regulated thyroid than not.

  • My doctor said that a low TSH is much better than a high TSH. I got a call like yours stating mine was 6.36. And that was after getting pregnant! He said it was much higher prior to getting pregnant and it's a miracle that I was even able to conceive. I started medication at 5 weeks so hopefully everything remains ok.

Well this isn't quite right.  If you are pregnant, a high TSH number is actually much easier to treat.  The meds are completely safe.  Whereas with a low TSH number your options for medication really aren't that great, but it's one of those situations where you have to weigh the damage of not controlling your thyroid vs. the risk of the medication.

Anyway, I have Graves Disease which is an autoimmune thing where my thyoid went crazy producing WAY too much thyroid and my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) was essentially 0.  Fortunately I wasn't pregnant at that time, was able to take the meds and get it into remission before pregnancy.

A previous poster is correct that it could be a fluke thing, caused by being in your first trimester.  After the first trimester your baby will be making it's own thyroid and yours should regulate a bit.  If it's still low at your next check then you'll want to see an endocrinologist in collaboration with your OB.   Good luck!
