DH and I were just discussing this. DS is almost to the height limit on his infant carrier. We bought convertibles a while ago, but haven't installed them yet. LO is good to sit up in a shopping cart or highchair (most styles) in a restaurant. Sometimes he is napping if we're at a restaurant though, so the carrier is nice for that.
All that being said, I think we will be switching before he hits 7 months. I personally find the infant carrier heavy and awkward.

this. We bought her one when they lost hers at the airport, but ended up only using it once so far.
K and I are giving it a trial run in a week. It will just be the 2 of us for 3 weeks. DH is a little more apprehensive about switching. I think she is ready. She does the high chairs and shopping carts just fine. I can't wait to ditch the carrier.
I was going to ask this myself as I have started looking at them, but wasn't sure when to make the switch. N still has plenty of room in his carrier as he is only 13ish lbs and 24 inches. So we will probably wait awhile. I baby wear so I don't really lift the carrier much. He is doing pretty good at sitting these days but we haven't attempted a high chair out yet because is so small the seem to swallow him up.
We did about 2-3 months ago (LJ was 4 months or 5 I think). He does great in his and its not a problem. It does suck that you wake them up when you get them out but at this point he hardly wants to nap anyways.
We switched over to the convertible seat the beginning of May. H is much more comfortable and does better during car rides now. He even enjoys stores and restaurants much more since he isn't on his carrier.
Thanks for all the input. I have been looking at them. I have one saved on the computer to show DH. I just was wondering when everyone was deciding to make the switch.
LO still has room to grow into infant carrier but I do agree it is awkward and starting to get heavy. He does well in his strollers and high chair. I take the small stroller with me everywhere and the big one goes on our walks. I haven't tried the restaurant high chairs but I don't think he would do very well. I tried the shopping cart about a month and a half ago and he flopped over to the side. He isn't sitting by himself quite yet. He does wonderful assisted but not by himself. We have been working on it.
I seem to be alone on this one! We are perfectly happy with the carrier. Yes, it's heavy, but I don't like waking him up and he often falls asleep in the car. 90 percent of the time he will stay asleep for awhile once we get into the house. It works well for us. Not sure we will go until the max weight limit before switching, but it's not something we will be doing anytime soon.

I'm right there with you! I think it helps that we have a snap n go, so if it's anything further than just inside, we'll put her in that.
I'm also hoping that by putting off buying convertibles until we need to, they'll last through two kids before they expire.
When the Radian RXT was super on sale on Amazon I bought one for DS. I was it hing to buy one, so it worked out. It is installed in our car, and FFIL and FMIL both have bases installed for the infant carrier in their cars. So the carrier is just used as our extra seat right now. Once he outgrows the carrier, we'll decide what kind of inexpensive alternative convertible to buy. This is working very well for us so far. DS loves the Radian RXT. He hated riding in the carrier.
We switched last month. V is on the longer side was was getting uncomfortable. He also is on the heavier side and I couldn't do the carrier anymore.
He LOVES his convertible. Took us two tries to get the right one. He hated the Britax Pavillion (and Boulevard) because of the additional head protection. I guess his big old head felt too restricted and he couldn't see. We settled on exchanging the Pavillion for the Britax Marathon. He loves that seat. In DH's car someone gave us a hand me down Britax Roundabout. Very similar to the Marathon.
Thankfully he transfers really easily when sleeping so napping isn't an issue for us.

You are not alone! Plus, I know how much that seat cost, and I'm using it as long as possible! I finally ordered a stroller today (Baby Jogger City Mini) because that keyfit caddy cost $100 and I wanted to use it as much as possible!
Soon because 22lbs is the limit and DS is 21 lbs. I'm ready b/c the carrier is heavy. He sits up well, but we haven't tried a high chair or shopping cart yet. I can always use the cover and blanket to stabilize him more if needed. He will be so much more comfortable b/c he is crammed into the infant carrier. He doesn't really sleep while we are out anyway, so that isn't an issue for us. I end up holding him when we are out anyway.

Not alone, DD is still in the carrier and plan on it for as long as she will fit in it. She's too much of a car napper for me to want to deal with transferring.

The bolded statement exactly... except he instead of she
Also, my LO is pretty little. I don't think he will outgrow his infant seat until he is about a year old. It is getting a bit heavy to carry around, but he falls asleep in the car so much, I would feel bad if I always had to wake him.
