Preschool??

How many of you have signed your LOs up on preschool waiting lists?

I was talking to a mom friend of mine last week (who has a 3yo and a son two months younger than DS) and she was talking about how she'd already signed her youngest up on the waiting list for her preferred pre-school. I was so surprised...it honestly hadn't even crossed my mind until she mentioned it! I feel super behind and I'm hoping there are some of you who haven't visited preschools yet either, because then I wouldn't feel like such a lousy mom. We live in a small town so there are only a handful of decent preschools and I would feel terrible if DS couldn't go to one because I dropped the ball.

I'm definitely going to call the Montessori preschool next week and schedule a visit!

Re: Preschool??

  • Wouldn't even cross my mind yet, even if we were putting DD in preschool. Which we're not.

I'll be very curious to see people's responses because I just had this conversation with my mom yesterday and ended saying that when he turns 2, I'll start researching preschools in our area with the goal of enrolling him (or at least transitioning him from his current DCP to the school or center where he'll go to pre-school) around age 3.  I hope that's not too late!!

Right?! The same friend who brought it up to me said she waited too long with her first son and he only got into 1 preschool (which wasn't her first choice). Apparently everyone in our town is way more on top of this than I am lol.

  • I have not even started to think about preschool yet.  I'm guessing we won't put him in preschool until he's 4 (prob just one year of preschool before kindergarten) so I'm definitely not going to worry about that just yet.

  • Wow! That seems early. Do you live in a big city? We don't and I can't see it being an issue to get in nearly anywhere we want.

I have not visited but I am aware of the schools in our area and have a preference. The waiting list is not long (one benefit of living in a very small town) so I am not compelled to sign him up at this point.

Our daycare is part of the school district and his center holds everyone from infants to kindergarten. Since he's already an existing "student," he already qualifies for priority registration but, OMG, I've watched pre-school sign up and it is INSANE. Priority registration has lines going the length of the entire building but non-priority had people camped out in tents to be first in line for an 8am sign up. We live in a pretty good district so everyone wants to come to this center but I never expected that kind of turnout!

  • Nope... Can't even enroll until 2.9 years old around here.  Got a while to think about it!

I'm kinda leaning towards homeschooling ... so haven't thought about it myself.  If we were going to put him in daycare or preschool it would probably be at one of the centers at the hospital my Hubby and FIL work at.

Having the daycare right above FIL's office is a bonus.. specially considering he is in the Police Dept haha

  • We can't get on the lists yet but dd's daycare just got certified as a state preschool so barring any unexpected changes we will just stay put.

Not a big city, about 15k is our population. There are only 2 preschools (I think, I haven't researched too thoroughly) that aren't religious or for families on aid, so space is very limited.

Um, I have a THREE year old and haven't done such a thing yet.  He has a December birthday, so he won't be able to start kindergarten until fall 2015.  I want to send him to preschool the year before kindergarten, and you have to register in the spring of the year for the following fall, so I will register him next spring.  There are at least 3 preschools in our little town and I am not worried about him getting in to one of them.  I was just talking to my cousin who lives here in the same town and has a 2 year old and told me she was going to be starting preschool.  When I asked her which one, she clarified that she was actually just signed up to attend a playgroup that meets 1 hour a week and guarantees her a spot at the preschool she wants.  I pretty much just think she was trying to show off, not that it's really that hard to get into the preschool group at our YMCA...

Honestly, I wouldn't even be considering sending him if it weren't for the fact that they just started doing all day kindergarten around here and it would be a tough transition to go from being at home to being in school a full day.  It would be good for him socially so he doesn't end up being as shy as I was, but I'm not too worried about attending preschool for the "academics".  I never went to preschool and was in honors and AP classes in school, did great on my SAT, got into college no problem, Dean's list.  My parents read to me a lot, taught me my ABCs and 123s, helped me with math homework, drilled me on spelling words, and my aunt who was a teacher gave me work sheets that I enjoyed doing.  Parental involvement goes a long way.

  • There's a wait list just to take a tour at our preferred preschool, so I've signed up for the tour and am waiting for them to call me back.  They won't let you sign up to join the wait-list until you've visited their facility - so we haven't quite signed up LO for preschool yet.  My sister's son was on the waitlist for her preferred preschool, right up until he entered kindergarten...that's the only reason that we started research on preschool this early.
