Have any of you successfully moved to dc using a spoon? DD moves to the toddler room next week and they are expected to feed themselves. They have been working with dd at school, but I honestly have not tried much at home. Last night I decided I had to draw a line and DD had to start TRYING to use a spoon. I sat the bowl in front of her and a spoon. DD immediately understood what I was trying to do and started screaming. She picked up the spoon and threw it on the floor. I got a fresh spoon, rise and repeat. (The dog was really confused what game we were playing). Finally, on spoon 4, DD gave up and decided I wouldn't feed her. She picked up the spoon, looked me in the face, held the spoon over the side of her tray and let go. She proceeded to eat with her hands. I guess neither of us won. Anyone have tips to make this easier on both of us? I keep reminding myself this too will pass...

Re: Using a spoon?
We have been working on it, but only because he showed interest in feeding himself with a spoon/fork. I have to help him load it 9 times out of 10 still and halfway through a bowl of yogurt he decides to say screw the spoon and goes for it with his hands or lets me feed him.
I would just keep trying to work on it, eventually she'll be interested in it. Plus there's plenty of things they can eat that don't require a spoon.
Yes, dd eats a lot of pasta so I think if I keep encouraging it she will be using her hands a lot!

In the last week, my son has really started showing interest in using the spoon and he's been getting better and better. Pick something she really likes so there's definite motivation. I give my son his own spoon and I keep one in my hand while I feed him. I feed him a spoonful and then guide his hand to the bowl and tell him it's turn (I use the suction cup bowls and stick the bowl to his tray). I let him feed himself until he starts to lose a little interest and then I give him a spoonful myself and guide his hand to the bowl and tell him it's his turn again. It is slowwwww going but he's getting better and better. Another weird thing he likes that is helping his coordination with the spoon, is when we have a snack like goldfish crackers, he likes it when I put one on his spoon and let him feed it to himself with the spoon. At first I just thought he was going to use the spoon to launch the cracker but he seemed to really like bringing it to his mouth.
My son is a huge pasta eater so I cannot wait until he masters a utensil that will let him feed that kind of food to himself all the time!
Sounds like you two were having quite the power struggle.
DS loves feeding himself with a spoon. Usually we load it up and hand it to him. At first we'd hold onto it and help him guide it to his mouth, but now he usually can get it there himself. Just this week he started wanting to scoop the food onto the spoon himself. So we're helping him with that, trying to help him aim the spoon correctly, etc. He is also really into forks right now, haha. I stab some food onto it and either feed him or give it to him. I was paranoid about him poking his eye at first but he hasn't even come close.
This progression has taken a month at least. I would suggest you keep working with your DD, maybe load the spoon for her and give it to her at first instead of just giving her the bowl and spoon and hoping she uses them both correctly. And send finger foods to DC in the meantime. GL!
DS likes feeding himself with a spoon but I load it for him first and then he takes it from me and guides it to his mouth. There are plenty of times that he gets frustrated with the fact that it takes longer than eating with his hands, so we still do a mix of the two. He's slowly getting better with the spoon, so I'd say just practice with her.
And if it makes you feel better, there are plenty of times that DS gets annoyed with the fact that eating with a spoon takes longer and tosses the spoon over the side of his tray to the floor as well. So you're definitely not alone!
DS was using the spoon for a few weeks then he cut several teeth (all at once ). Now he's in a phase where he refuses the spoon. If I hand him the spoon he flips his plate/bowl over and eats with his hands.
We are currently trying to re-intro the spoon. All I can think to do is to keep trying. We model good eating habits by sitting down as a family to eat. That's the best advice I can give. Keep trying and set an example.
I hope he picks it up soon.
We started with mashed sweet potatoes...they stick on the spoon very nicely. We would give her the first spoonful to show her how to do it, then get some potatoes on the spoon and lay the spoon on her tray. She eventually did it herself. We did that over and over. Now, she won't let us give her the first bite...she wants to dip the spoon in herself.

This is the same for my DS. Mostly he plays with spoon and feeds himself by hand. But he refuses to let us feed him. I think buy some of the full cover bibs!!
