OK I don't post here often and idk if this is an UO or not but I really don't understand how people pay over $100 dollars a month in disposable diapers for one child. I use them with my 7 month old and we use about 1 economy size box a month which when we were using name brand diapers was only $40 a month, now with Luvs they're only like $28 with Amazon mom....Really how the heck are people spending $100 dollars a month in diapers?

  • Aahhh...I love my crocs for yard work! It doesn't matter if they get all greenstained from mowing and if I step in something unsavory I just hose em off!

Now...I don't wear them anywhere else. I think it's kind of weird when I see people in crocs at like the grocery store.

It may be an UO, but I agree! We spend $6 a month or so on one pack of Luvs (or less) a month for nighttime diapering. Multiply that by diaper changes, we would spend about 30-40 a month if we used disposable diapers FT.

They are probably changing them more often. I wondered this myself when a FB friend said she was glad she started making cloth diapers for her DS because spending over 100 a month was ridiculous. I agree it's ridiculous, but seriously, how many times do you change your kid? I buy Luvs and we spend about 30 to 40 a month depending on sales.

I LOVE crocs on little kids.  I think they are cute!  I actually think they look horrible on adults and very unprofessional and unsanitary on medical professionals ( I'm a nurse and never worn them, but I've seen a lot of things splatter on shoes, I couldn't imagine wearing shoes on a nursing floor that had holes in them)

In labor with DD1 my water broke on the nurse's shoes. I'm sure in that moment she appreciated she was not wearing crocs ;)

I agree with you for most kids.  Unfortunately, my kids are very fair and will burn in 20 minutes without sunscreen.  I hate applying sunscreen because I'm lazy and also feel that it can't be great for them.  During the summer, we'll sometimes stay inside just so I can avoid putting sunscreen on them.  Playing in the backyard also works because it's mostly in the shade during the afternoon.

I agree with AG. DD has red hair and really fair skin but I only put sunscreen on her of we are going to outside for an hour or more. She has only gotten burnt once. We were at the beach and didn't reapply enough and she got a little pink.

How often could someone change their kid though? I change my daughter at least every 2 hours, after she wakes up from every nap and immediately when I notice she's pooped. But idk...maybe others change their babies more. We've found Amazon Mom to be amazing especially with subscribe and save. If we order more than 5 things a month we get 20% off of everything in our order...So we just take advantage of that with most of the baby things like diapers and wipes.

Considering I was the one who brought it up, I'll say that as the kids get older, the price goes down per month.  But here (Canada) there is no Amazon mom.  The only place to buy diapers is in actual stores.  And even boxes of Costco diapers at least $30 a box and in general you would need at least 2 boxes a month (once the kids are older).  With newborn diapers you can only buy packages of 30 diapers and that lasts maybe 3 days.  Those packages are $15 to $20 a package.  So by the time my kid reached 6ish months I would have been spending maybe $70 a month instead.  Add another kid and I'm again over $100 a month.

I agree. Julia's class took a walking trip to the town library this week (about 1/2 mile from school, at least half the walk was shaded). Afterwards she told me that one of the room mothers put sunscreen on her and I was actually kind of annoyed, especially since it was probably a harsh chemical version instead of an all natural version. And that woman is totally catty, so I'm sure she thought I was the lazy parent who didn't bother with sunscreen.

This would really annoy me.  At both schools my kids attend, sunscreen is considered OTC medication and require you to fill out a form to give permission and specific instructions on times and days to apply.  And this is coming from someone who uses a "harsh chemical version" of sunscreen.  I've tried many of the natural ones and my kids still get burned.  I would love to find a natural one that works well.

Even though I sunscreen my kid ALL THE TIME, I agree with you. My daughter has extreme skin, though.  She even has a doctors note (PITA) that the school required so the nurse can apply to her before lunch if needed. She burns rather bad after just 10 minutes, though (and I don't mean just a pink hue, she will actually burn to the point of hurting her, and the first time it happened in grade K last year the teacher freaked out and called me).  I digress, most kids don't have her crap skin (which she got from me) and YES, people over sunscreen kids.

Vitamin D is rather important in kids, and most kids have below normal levels because of sunscreen.  The beach? Of course.  Outside for 15 min? (unless you're my kid and others with her skin)..  let them get some vitamin D.

I don't remember that thread, but since two posters thought it was me, I just assume everyone thinks it's me. But I can promise you not only do I not have that kind of time, share those opinions, or really care to talk religion on TB, but the only AE I ever had was Antoine Dodson and he got banned.  Wah wah.

I actually can't get that much done in terms of cooking and housework while wearing a baby.

I can take a walk, go shopping, play with an older child, and maybe vaccuum, but that's about it.  I'm always surprised when people say to "just wear" the baby like that is the magic answer for everything.

Um, yes. WTF cooks over an oven while wearing a kid?

Right!? I feel like I am missing something.

My cousin lives next door, and I'm not exaggerating when her baby was little she'd change her every 15 mins or so. She felt inside her diaper every few minutes to make sure she wasn't wet, and if she so much as dribbled she'd change her every.single time. Also used at least 3 wet wipes for each pee diaper... I would shudder to think about how much she's spent on diapers over her 2 years.

Why in the world would she do that?

Okay I'm in Canada and this is crazy. I bought huge econoboxes of newborn diapers. I'm talking like 100 diapers per box for like 30 dollars from WalMart. If all you'd buy is the 30 pack from Babies R Us, yeah you'd spend a lot, but you'd also be a terrible shopper. Even for me buying all of our diapers in a "real store" I still spend 40 bucks a month.

I was just going to say this.  I'm in Canada and spend about $40ish a month on name brand diapers by shopping sales and buying bulk.  Although now that Target opened up here I started buying Up&Ups, which are even cheaper than Huggies.  DS gets changed roughly 6x a day, maybe we're not changing as often?

If their kid is in daycare, they are required to change diapers every 2 hours by law. So a kid in daycare from 7-5 has 4-6 diaper changes a day. that could play into it.

    Her DS isn't in daycare.

I mean, even if a child was changed 10 times a day 7 days a week, that's about 280 diapers a month. One box has around 100 in it. So at 25 bucks a box, that's 75 dollars for a month. I know prices are different in other regions but here, where she lives too, you can buy Luvs for 20 a box. Who knows. Maybe she changed him as much as Hav's cousin did with hers. Or maybe she just bought really pricey diapers!

My UO is that I hate how big and puffy cloth diapers are. That is the main reason {besides laundry} that I'm not going to CD. I can't imagine trying to put them under clothes.

So many people say this.  I've never had problems.  Maybe it has to do with how your kid is shaped too?  DS has always been in the appropriate size for his age and he's even always been tall.  I know some people size up on bottoms due to cloth though.  I don't know.

My UO:  I think a good amount of people do their kids a disservice by interacting with them too much.  I know so many people who feel like they have to play with their kid 24/7, plan activities, etc. and then they hit like 3 and they're all WHHHYYYY won't they play by themselves??!!?!  Well, because they've never learned how to.  You've always entertained them and/or scheduled their time.  I'm not saying people should ignore their kids, but it's about striking a balance.  Kids need plenty of free play time to do their own thing and learn how to entertain themselves!

My point was most kids don't have the coloring your son does. You will never convince me that slathering chemicals on a child is better than exposure to vitamin D. Of course I am not talking the pool or beach but if we are going to the park for 20 minutes no sunscreen here.

    Totally.

I think the sun exposure thing is extremely overrated.  I think it's about striking a balance.  Burning is always bad.  Responsible sun exposure is important.  It's going to look different for everyone though.

Ok, I might get flamed for this but here's my take on the cost of disposables versus cloth. I do think that you can easily spend less on disposables if you buy generic or even mainstream name brands with good deals/coupons. But if I were going to use disposables I'd get the most eco-friendly kind I could because I want to minimize the chemicals that touch my baby. So then it certainly would not be cheaper. That's part of why I cloth, to minimize the chemical contact. But there are other reasons that are not simply related to cost. I agree though, that the whole cost argument is very tricky. Especially when people become obsessed and keep buying "cute fluff" they don't need.

You could absolutely spend more on cloth than disposables depending on what you're going to do.  Some people go crazy and spend insane amounts of money on diapers and/or have super large stashes.  I don't understand how people don't understand that it does save money on a basic level though.  I spent ~$280 on 24 diapers that I've used for more than 3 years now.  I would have spent more than that on diapers in the first year, even if I couponed.  Even if you factor in extra water I would have at the very least broken even within the first year.  And our diapers aren't the cheapest option out there either.

I think it's totally acceptable to think that the cost vs. benefits when all things are considered isn't worth it, but if you're looking just at monetary cost it's no contest.  People who try to say that it doesn't actually save money are wrong.  I don't know how they try to rationalize it.  It's just confusing to me why someone would think that.

It all depends on where you are. There are no bulk packages of newborn diapers here. None. I looked in every store that sold diapers (and we don't have Babies R Us in our area). Even with coupons and sales, most times it's no less then $30 a box for 100 diapers.  And from what my friends tell me, it's about 2 1/2 boxes a diapers per month that they go through.  And that is shopping at superstore/Costco which are the cheapest in our area.  However, now with Target here it may change.

I'll probably get flamed for this like I did for saying I didn't read every single food label for ingredients... but I don't have the energy to worry about the chemicals in Huggies touching her tushie. I did cloth for the first year because I wanted to care about chemicals and keeping them at bay, but I'm obviously too lazy and I hated constantly fighting the barn yard stink, IMO and IME it was simply not worth it. Heck, I still use J&J because I have at least a 2 year supply left from gifts and I love the smell.

I also think that people with cloth diaper obsessions and people that are constantly buying "designer diapers" need a serious hobby because that's just messed up, again, IMO.

I don't disagree with the bolded. I'm in diaper buying mode right now, but once I'm done with my stash, I'm done. That's it. Unless the things I buy just don't work out for the baby.

Eh, while I don't agree with it and wouldn't spend my money on over-priced diapers the people who do are collectors and people collect all sorts of dumb things.  To each their own.

  • Ok mine has nothing to do with diapering but with MIL.  We are going to see a baseball game with her tomorrow night and I'm afraid I will end up pissed off at her again and get snappy in her face.  I'm tired and reached my max with her trying to parent our child.  IMO grandparents should spoil the kid and not lay down the laws. It's like she can't stop being a parent and she is starting to make me think she is controlling.  DH knows my concern and has talked to her numerous times about it and yet she still does it.  I think it may just be who she is and it won't change.  last weekend we were there at her house for a little bit and she ordered DH to go wash his hands as soon as we got in.  Seriously, I need to call my attorney that did my will when I was single and update it married now that we have a kid.  I would hate for MIL to be the person taking care of DD if DH and I both died at the same time. What do you guys think, am I nuts.  I have issues with controlling people because I use to be married to one.

  • I love crocs. Every time I wear them my 3 year old throws a fit and tells me to take my ugly shoes off and put pretty ones on.

My UO is that I hate how big and puffy cloth diapers are. That is the main reason {besides laundry} that I'm not going to CD. I can't imagine trying to put them under clothes.

I hate that too. I spent even more $$ buying bamboo inserts to make them trimmer. I am still going to use them because I'll be saving a lot of money eventually. Plus DD3 is so skinny that I need the CDs to hold up her pants.

You know, this made me think, I said we never had issues with fluffy butt, but that probably had a lot to do with DS's tiny heiny.  There were definitely times when it helped to keep his pants up.

re: CDs superiority.  I don't think it's about attitude, it's about fact.  They are better in general ways, but it doesn't mean it's the superior choice for you and your family.  It's kind of like breastfeeding.  It IS indisputably best under most circumstances.  Doesn't mean it's the right fit for you or possible for everyone.

I feel that way about a lot of "mommy wars".  I guess my FFFC is that I think a lot of "mommy war" topics are dumb because one is usually probably best in a general kind of way.  Doesn't mean on a practical individual level it's best for you or your family, but why fight to the death about how it's not right FOR YOU?  Just make the decision that's right for you and move on.  Same on the other side.  Why try to convince everyone that something is best when it is?  I don't get it.  I think most of these arguments go back to people being insecure with their choices.  Either they're insecure so they need to try to make others feel bad while AW'ing their "superior" choices OR they're insecure so they have to make a BFD about how they didn't make the "wrong" decision.  Who cares?
