Weight (again!)

Re: Weight (again!)

  • tealowltealowl member

I gave my scale to my mom so I don't even have it in the house. I'm a calorie counter/dieter, and I exercise routinely, but I didn't want to obsess about weight. I just focus on eating 80% healthy, not drinking my calories, chugging water all day long and exercising, so I don't anticipate a large weight gain.

I haven't felt my best this last month, so I haven't been the to gym much, and it's really difficult to jog, but hopefully 2nd tri I'll get my energy back up.

And no junk food is allowed in the house right now! And thankfully I haven't wanted fast food or junk (yet), so my eating is pretty on track.

But I haven't weighed myself once, because there's lots of bloat going on and I know I'll freak out if I do.

you really should not gain weight in the first trimester.

You are so helpful in every post you answer.  We should have a weekly ask ChiAmy thread.

That is a fabulous idea, she really seems like she knows it all!

This would be awesome. Let me be the first one to call it, but she will be the post partum mom who can't lose the baby weight. Seen it every pregnancy, the one that posts obsessively and critically about weight and claims to be gaining nothing somehow ends up gaining plenty. And they can't lose it

Nope, I lost all my weight with my son, and I gained 20 lbs.

I think I remember you posting that same one liner in another weight thread. You're a real peach.

  • All of you that have gain weight be happy!!!! I have lost 9 pounds and my doctor told me I cannot lose anymore or I will be put back in the hospital! I have been in the hospital already 4 times I am 11.3 weeks. I cannot keep any food down. All I do is eat and then it comes right back up. He has me off work right now all he wants me to do is focus on eatting. Be happy you are gaining I wish I was!!!!

Is that a Hollywood phone app you have?  By my math, if you're pregnant around 40 weeks, you're just over 1/4 of the way through.  So if you multiply your 7.3 lbs by 4 you get less than 30.  I'd say you're right on track!  ;)

We women are so hard on ourselves already.  We don't need people making us feel worse about ourselves.  We're usually pretty good at beating ourselves up on our own.  Let's keep this supportive, ladies!

I will say, I must have too much of a filter.  Y'all are killing me!  Hahaha!

LOL yes!  That is what I thought, but then I realized that I forgot about the weight of the baby.. and the other stuff that comes with the baby.  Either way, I am fine.  I bet I will gain about 35-40 pounds and 25-35 is recommended (for a normal BMI to begin with, mine is 21) so I am good with that!

  • I haven't gained anything yet and was worried.  I asked my doctor about it yesterday and she said that since the baby doesn't weigh much of anything at this point I shouldn't be worried about the lack of weight gain.  It is very common to worry about our weight while pregnant.  I wouldn't refuse to weight myself as I think it is important to monitor your weight whether you need to lose or gain but try not to obsess over it, talk to your doctor and be as healthy as you possibly can.  I understand the craving with m/s I got them also.....no fun!

False.  You can gain weight in the first trimester.  That's what I've read from several resources.  Many women with severe ms struggle to gain weight, though.

I am just going by what my Dr. tells me.  She said you should not gain weight.  Yes it happens, but don't worry about the scale. It's just a number.

Perhaps if your first post was like this one you wouldn't get so much crap ChiAmy. You lack tact.

OP the most important thing to worry about while you are pregnant is being healthy for you and the baby, a scale is not going to tell you that. If your doctor isn't worried you shouldn't be either. I've stayed very level so far but that doesn't mean I'm doing any better or worse than you are.

Stay positive and maybe step away at least from that mean app!

Last time, I gained a ton in the 1st tri and it massively slowed down the 2nd and 3rd tri.  I also got the best advice ever last time - if you can stand it, don't look at your weight and don't ask. Just tell them to let you know if you're gainign too much or too little. It saved me a TON of stress. I looked away every time I got weighed and went off how I felt in terms of keeping myself in check.

I like this idea! So far I haven't put the scale away, but I think I'm getting closer to that point. I'm 8 weeks today and have gained 4 lbs. I'm going on vacation tomorrow and I think it would be a good idea to get rid of the scale before we leave. There are so many great restaurants we're going to and I don't really want to know the damage. I really try to make healthy choices but lately the things I want are not the healthiest, I just try to keep it moderate.

  • I gained 7 then I finally pooped and now im holding around 3 lb weight gain lol

I agree with this!  As someone who suffered from an eating disorder for the better part of her life, I am always weighed backwards so I cannot see the numbers.  I plan to continue this tradition and will ask my obgyn to inform me if there are weight issues in either direction.

  • I won't find out how much I've gained until my next appointment but I'm sure the number has gone up. I've been able to eat pretty much nothing except carbs. I'm not stressing. I gained 30Lbs with Ds and I got crap from one of my doctors that I should have only gained 25. But I lost all the weight with no problem after baby was born. As my Dh says, just take care of yourself as best as you can and baby will be taken care of too.

  • I gained 6 in the first 6 weeks and am 11 weeks now. I took the advice of the other ladies on the board after I had a mental freak out about it, and haven't been weighing at all. Only at the doctor's office, backwards. They tell me if I'm doing ok. I am little curious to see what it is now...

DO NOT worry about it. If your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't be either. Believe me, I know it can be hard to see yourself gaining more weight than average.but if you keep focusing on that, it will take away from the amazing person your body is building. If you are really upset about it, I would talk to the doctor about ways you can incorporate some exercise, or maybe modify your diet a bit. I am sure everything will even out during the course of the 40 weeks. Hang in there girl! Hugs to you!!

  • OP your weight gain sounds just fine.

Your body is going to do what it's going to do to support a healthy pregnancy, many women I have known have eaten very healthy and also worked out all throughout their pregnancies, and gained 45+. I have gained in the first tri with my last two, but this pregnancy has been different in that aspect. So what may be normal for one is not what everyone is going to do. Try not to worry and just enjoy this special time in your life!

This.  Assuming you are a healthy weight, you should gain 1-5ish pounds in the first tri, and 1 pound every week after that.  That obviously is an average and everyone is different.

OP said she gained 7, just 2 pounds over the norm.  That could be water weight/gas/bloat/additional blood -- anything.  And if she's smaller, she should be gaining more.  I have never heard anyone say "You should not gain weight" in your first tri.  That's silly.

    This.

Baby weighs less than most light snacks until 24 weeks. Even with a little boob weight, by six months, ou should have only gained 10ish lbs max.

Talk to your doc. He may recommend a nutritionist.

    Everybody is different.

Whaaaat?  Where are you getting these facts?  Look up any Pregnancy Association, OBGYN association, Mayo Clinic - they have recommendations on weight gain, and yes, they all say you'll gain in the first tri.  It's not the baby, it's other factors that are causing the weight gain.  And I highly doubt ANYONE would recommend a nutritionist for 7 freaking pounds.

  • I'm almost 10 weeks and have actually lost 2 pounds. I've been writting down my caloric intake, and I am only taking in about 1000 calories a day. The doctor wasn't worried at all. She said that weight gain in the first trimester is linked with how healthy the mom was before pregnancy. She said that moms that didn't have stores of micronutrients because of a poor diet prior to pregnancy tend to gain more pounds in the first trimester because their bodies are telling them to eat more to account for the low nutrients.

Also, weight gain during pregnancy isn't 100 percent linked to how much food you eat. Hormones play a huge part too, as well as your exercise levels. Instead of stepping on the scale, write down the foods you eat and do a calorie tally. You may find out that you are eating the proper ammount of callories, but other factors are making you gain the weight.
  • I agree with the step away from the scale advice. Wt fluctuates day to day. Were you fasting one wt and after lunch the next? Have you pooped? are you bloated from eating salty food?
I'm not weighing myself at home, only at my dr appts and focusing on healthy eating and staying active. At my 9 week appt I had gained 1.8kg in a month, even though I swear I'm not overeating. I'm trying not to let at bother me, and staying focused on healthy habits.

Your body goes into starvation mode if you eat less than 1200 calories a day. Your doctor expressed no concern? Yeah, my doctor would have expressed concern about this if I wasn't pregnant let alone now

1000 calories? whatever....just another "look how awesome I am" post.  But honestly, it's NOT awesome. Doesn't sound healthy to me

When I was pregnant with DS my doctor told me 2400 calories per day was healthy for pregnancy. She also said 20 lbs was bare minimum for weight gain, anything else could cause developmental issues in the baby.

I gained 33 lbs total with DS and lost 39 lbs after having him.
