Cows milk and Diarreah

My son is 1 year old and I have been slowly adding milk to his bottle for the last couple of weeks. When I added one oz to his 8-10 oz bottles he was fine, but the fast 5 days when I added a few oz he has had terrible diarreah and now has a diaper rash from so many diaper changes.  He was on Soy formula due to gas as an infact and eats cheese and is fine.  I am  not sure why the milk is causing the diarreah. Any suggestions? I called the ped and she said I Could switch to soy or rice or almond milk. I really would rather do regular milk since he was on soy formula for so long. I don't know whether to give up or keep trying and deal with the diarreah and diaper rashes. I am wondering if I should stick it out, switch to one of milks she suggested, or try lactose free milk. Any suggestions?

  • I would try switching to soy or almond milk and see if the issues your son is having clear up. DD1 is lactose intolerant - she was on soy formula first. then I tried switching her to lactose free whole milk. she kept throwing up. I switched her to soy and she was fine. for the record, DD1 eats cheese and has yogurt every day just fine. milk and ice cream are the worst foods for lactose intolerant people to handle. I definitely wouldn't keep trying regular whole milk - your son's body is reacting to something.

  • I don't know the ingredient list of soy formulas.  If it doesn't contain lactose, then it sure sounds like your son is lactose intolerant.  (Cheese has much less lactose than fluid milk.  As does yogurt.)  And lactose intolerance causes gas and can cause diarrhea.  I agree with PP in so far as you could try the change of milk, and see if it resolves things.

I would switch too.  I have always heard that cows milk and cause constipation at first during a switch and it is normal, but not diarrhea.  I would try switching and see if that clears it up.

  • My son had this same exact issue---diarhea, bad diaper rash, gas, and even throwing up when we made the switch from regular formula to cow's milk.  I talked with the pediatrician, and she suggested we switch to Lactaid Whole Cow's Milk for 4-5 months, and then try the slow integration of the regular Whole Cow's Milk again to see if it works then. She said it's very common, not to worry, and that it doesn't mean he will be lactose-intolerant for life.

Once we started Lactaid, he symptoms went away within a week, and we've had no problems since.

  • We went and are still dealing with this.  However, our transition was much much slower. I spent a week giving maybe 4 oz formula and 2 oz cows milk. Then a week or so later did 3 and 3. Once I got to the 3 and 3, we had issues with diaper rash. So I stopped w/ cows milk for a few weeks and everything cleared up and then we started over and tried again.

We have never had a diaper rash until we started cows milk. And this was was more in the vaginal area versus the butt area, so I figured it was the protein in the cows milk. We would only have diarrhea every so often.  Her doctor agrees and told us to try soy milk.  The diarrhea I feel has gotten worse since we switched to soy.  Ugh.  I hope you can figure something out.

  • I had this same problem with LO, and after using a gentle, milk based formula!  We stopped the cow's milk and went to rice milk and she's been fine ever since!  Give switching a shot and see what happens.  LO can eat yogurt and hard cheeses without getting the same problems, as the lactose in those is broken down differently.
