I know this issue comes up all.the.time, but I have gained 7.3 pounds and I am 11 weeks. I am fine with that. I wish it was less, but whatever - I am good because I cannot change it. BUT according to my phone app that is "excessive weight gain" for 11 weeks. I know all doctors recommend different things. Some say do not gain yet, some say 5 pounds etc... but that can't be THAT bad, right? How much have you all gained? Has anyone been to the doctor yet and the doctor commented on the weight gain? I go next Thursday and hope she doesn't say anything!
Re: Weight (again!)
I have only gained 1.2 pounds but I am only 9 weeks. As of last week I had not gained any, but I also had the stomach flu a couple weeks ago. I have heard mixed reviews about wt. gain in the 1st trimester (from 2 lbs-5 lbs seems like the window). As long as you are eating healthy and getting in your exercise 3-5 times a week I wouldn't worry too much!

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

I went to the OB around 8.5 weeks and I had already gained 4lbs. I know that is partly due to the fact that I have been eating nonstop to curb the nausea, plus any bloat. My doctor didn't say anything, but I'm sure she will at my next appt if I keep that pace. I gained early with DD too, but it really did even out in the end....all in all I gained the recommended 35 lbs with her, so I'm not too concerned. Once I am feeling better, and can actually make an effort to eat what is healthy and not just what I think will settle my stomach, I'll be back on track.

False. You can gain weight in the first trimester. That's what I've read from several resources. Many women with severe ms struggle to gain weight, though.

This, and remember there's a lot of bloat going on during the first trimester.

Nasty! I couldn't eat any of that if I wanted to!! I have been living on grains while feeling sick. I do not eat meat and would throw up thinking about a milkshake or a donut. Yuck. I am trying to get more protein though, thanks! I think protein is the ticket.
Please calm down and step away from the scale.
Who knows how much of it is water vs. real weight gain.
I've read that 0 - 5lbs is normal during the first trimester, but it varies from person to person.
Weight is never one size fits all.
Again, step away from the scale (and the phone app).
Edit: I agree with PP to try to incorporate healthy foods into your diet when you are feeling up to it. I know you said you are eating a lot of carbs; what about adding sweet potatoes, quinoa, kale chips, edamame?

Don't stress about it. As you start feeling better and can make healthier food choices without feeling ill, then try to do that. I've always gained 4-5 lbs or so during the 1st tri then went on to gain only around 20 total by eating healthy and staying active.
If you're like me, all I can eat without getting sick is carbs and salt...it's so awful, I know, but I just can't get anything else passed my mouth. I have still been working 5 days/week and have gained 4 lbs or so. It just is what it is! I know I won't keep it up the whole pregnancy.
Some people will gain none or even lose then go on to gain 40 lbs or more. Don't beat yourself up about what you did on the first trimester, just try to do better from here on out!
Oh yes - I will. I remember her posting that she eats 1300-1500 calories a day while pregnant. If I did that I would not gain weight either
Instead, I choose not to diet and cut calories while I am pregnant
Sure, that may be the ideal scenario, but everyone's experience and body type is different. All a statement like that does is make those who have gained feel bad. It's easy not to gain if you are so nauseous that you can't eat much or keep anything down. Some women gain early and it ends up evening itself out in the end (this happened to me with my daughter, even though I had no appetite with her). I stayed within the recommended weight range.
You are so helpful in every post you answer. We should have a weekly ask ChiAmy thread.
seems like you really shouldn't make a blanket statement like that.
OP, I'm sure your doctor will talk to you about any possible weight concerns. Like others have said, if you focus on eating healthy things when you are feeling hungry I think you should be OK.
Personally I'm not weighing myself, b/c I think focusing on the number would drive me nuts.
I am just going by what my Dr. tells me. She said you should not gain weight. Yes it happens, but don't worry about the scale. It's just a number.
With my last pregnancy, I gained about 8lbs in the two or three weeks after I got my positive test... then I puked it all back up in morning sickness that lasted until about 18 weeks. I think my body knew a sh*tstorm was about to hit.
Everyone is different, unless your doctor is concerned, don't worry.
LOLing right now.

This would be awesome. Let me be the first one to call it, but she will be the post partum mom who can't lose the baby weight. Seen it every pregnancy, the one that posts obsessively and critically about weight and claims to be gaining nothing somehow ends up gaining plenty. And they can't lose it
Thank you! I asked about protein choices last week and I got some good suggestions. I have been choking them down as of yesterday. I know things will get better now that I am making myself eat healthier even though it tastes bad right now. I got edamame, quinoa, cottage cheese, almonds, beans, protein bars.. stuff like that. It is hard to eat healthy when you feel bad, but I gotta do it!
Also, I know a lot of it is water. I can feel that. I have always retained a lot of water and now it is worse!
This this this exactly! I am up 11.5 pounds at 11.5 weeks...wonderful. A pound a week.
I've gained somewhere from 5-8 lbs already. I'll be 12 weeks on Thursday. I hate it because I worked so hard to lose weight before I got pregnant (and I still have weight to lose), but I'm so damn hungry all the time. I wake up craving regular coke. Seriously, wtf is that? I never drink full sugar soda, and now I have a small one every couple of days. It's really weird.
My doctor is not concerned with my weight gain, and I'm glad for that. He told me I could see a nutritionist if I want to, but that's not something that interests me. I will just try to do my best.

First pregnancy I gained 15 pounds in my first tri. I was underweight to start with and my dr wanted to see weight gain.
Second pregnancy I was so sick that I lost a lot of weight. By the middle of 2nd tri I was back up to my pre pregnancy weight.
Current baby I'm up 6lbs. I'm chalking it up to blood volume and a lil bloat. Nothing much has changed with my body, except a small gut only I notice.
Just relax and ignore the scale, eat healthy foods and drink loads of water!
Sorry I dont know how to attach the actual picture!
LMAO!! I love Will Farrell!
Nope, I lost all my weight with my son, and I gained 20 lbs.
Is that a Hollywood phone app you have? By my math, if you're pregnant around 40 weeks, you're just over 1/4 of the way through. So if you multiply your 7.3 lbs by 4 you get less than 30. I'd say you're right on track!
We women are so hard on ourselves already. We don't need people making us feel worse about ourselves. We're usually pretty good at beating ourselves up on our own. Let's keep this supportive, ladies!
I will say, I must have too much of a filter. Y'all are killing me! Hahaha!
