3rd Trimester

poll: how long will your doctor "let you go"?

I asked my doc today and he said he would let me go two weeks past two date.  But, a week after EDD he would be doing U/S to make sure "baby is better off inside than out".  And then he said as far as an induction, he would be willing to do it after 38W if that is what I wanted and if baby and I seemed ready.

I'm comfortable with that answer.  I'm pretty sure I don't want an induction but also am a bit afraid of going much past my EDD.  I feel like I'm a newbie again because my water started leaking at 39W with DD and the doctor said they wanted the baby out within 24 hours due to risk of infection.  I wasn't having an contractions so I feel like it was basically an induction (had pitocin etc.).  I didn't have any 'progress' to speak of even though my water leaked.  I think I was 1 when I arrived at hospital so I'm not sure when DD would have been born if water didn't start leaking and I wonder if that was just a fluke (or if she meant she was ready?).

Re: poll: how long will your doctor "let you go"?

  • The paperwork I got from my OB said two weeks -- but in childbirth class, we were told the hospital policy is 1 week. I'm going to have to clarify at my next appointment.

  • when everything was "normal", she would've let me go 1 week past EDD.  Now that i've got PIH issues, she won't let me go overdue, and has specifically mentioned eviction at 39 w.
  • 2 days past due date.
  • We actually haven't discussed it yet, which kind of relieves me because I don't want to be pressured into considering an induction.
  • normally 1 week, but it'll depend as I'm having other issues so I may go before my EDD.

  • kitty: yeah I totally brought it up.  I'm pretty sure my doc is anti-induction but he also likes to consider what the patient wants.  I got the feeling that other than for some serious medical reasons an induction would only happen if I wanted it (and if he felt that the baby wouldn't be affected).

  • Because of my GD, the doctor said he wouldn't let me go past 40-41 weeks. Now, seeing as I'm due in the absolute MIDDLE of the Holidays, I don't know what exactly that means...

If the baby doesn't come by his due date, I've requested to schedule the induction (if its safe) on 12/29 due to our high deductible health insurance that resets 1/1/09.

But I have a sizing u/s next week and my first internal coming up, so we'll see what's going on in there...

If I didn't have GD, I'd assume I'd be going at least 1, maybe 2 weeks, past my due date.

  • My doctor has told me he will be ok with 3-4 days past my EDD but he is ok with inducing around 38 1/2 weeks if I am really wanting it.  However if there is no medical reason I doubt he would unless i begged for it.  :D
  • I do not go overdue, because the RhoGam injection I receive @ 28 weeks due to my blood type is only active for 12 weeks.

  • I have GD so my doctor will not let me go past my due date which is 12/20.  So next Thursday(12/18) if he is not here we will start the induction process.
  • I would have found another doctor if I was only given 2 days! That is not much leeway at all if you have anything but a standard 28 day, ovulate on day 14 cycle, and even then...

My doctor says 41 weeks, but I was told in my childbirth class that the doctor can't force you induce just because you're a week late.  Thank goodness I was charting and know I ovulated on day 13, putting my EDD one day earlier than what my doctor is going by!

  • My dr. induces at 41 weeks.  I don't believe she does inductions beforehand unless it is medically necessary.  I live 2 hrs away from my OB though and have to have a scheduled C/S, so we are doing it at 38 weeks, to lessen the chance of me going into labor on my own 2 hours away from the hospital I'm delivering at.
  • I'm doing a home birth, and my midwife will do an u/s at 41 weeks if I'm still pg, and once I hit 42 weeks she would be required to turn me over to my backup OB and he would handle things from there. She and I both want to avoid induction (and the need to go to a hospital) as much as possible.
