Success after IF

I think I am obsessed..

I want to breast feed little A for a year exclusively but lately have had a major supply issue and have had to supplement with formula.  Little A just eats more than I can supply.  I have been EP but wanted to go back to breatfeeding when he developed thrush so that is not an option at the moment.  I am currently trying everything to increase my supply this includes....Mothers Milk Tea 2 - 3 times a day, Lactation Cookies (which I must say are pretty damn good), and Fenugreek capsules.   I just started this and am hoping by the end of the week my milk will squirt across the room lol.  I have also been pumping every 2 hours for 15 - 20 minutes.  FX all this works

Sounds like you are doing all the right things! I have never done this myself, but I have heard about power pumping on the breastfeeding board. I think it's 10 minutes on the pump and then minutes off for an hour every other hour. Maybe ask over there for more tips. Good luck!

ETA I see you XP'd already!!

I went through all this too. Also try eating oatmeal, the real stuff not instant, every day for breakfast. You can add flaxseed to it too. And make sure you are drinking 100 oz of water a day and eating as much as you did while pregnant if not more.
GL, I hope you can get your supply up.

  • I echo the above. I found when I was pumping during DDs tongue tie problem (and I do it now to build my freezer stash) that if I massaged the girls first, pumped, took a few minute break to massage them again, and restarted the pump, I could get the flow to start again.

Also, it helped me to focused on something that wasn't pumping and for me it was trashy tv. A hands free bra helps it suck less too. Good luck. Pumping is way harder motivation wise than BFing.

  • I exclusively pump and did EXACTLY same things (cookies, Mother's milk tea & fenugreek capsules) in the begining to boost up my production and it worked!  I had to supplement with formula in the beginning because I only produced 1.5-2.0 per session, but my production got double so no more formula!

I try to pump as frequently as possible (3 hrs in general), too.  I hear you being obsessed about BF because my life is now centered around my baby and pumping!!!  Good luck!!

  • Sounds like a great plan to up your supply. I also agree that the oatmeal helps. And for the fenugreek to really work you need to take more than what is written on the bottle. Kellymom.com has more info about it. GL!!!

  • Good for you! No one ever talks beforehand how difficult BF can be. Kudos to you for sticking with it!

And ditto the oatmeal and tons of water, and doing something to keep your mind off worrying when you're pumping (easier said than done!). Good luck, you're doing a great job!

  • Great job!!! Everyone gave you great advice. Baby is definitely more efficient and keeps that supply up better than pumping, at least in my experience, so fingers crossed you can get him on the breast soon Smile
