How much time is your DH taking off?

For mobile: How much time is your DH taking off?

My DH only wants to take a week, which isn't even nearly all his vacation time.  My best friend just had a baby last week, and her DH took a month off, so I think I have a skewed expectation.  Just curious what everyone else's DH is doing.

Re: How much time is your DH taking off?

  • Mine is planning on two weeks, but after talking to a lot of people, I kinda just want him to take a week now and then a week later in the summer.  They eat and sleep so much in the beginning and I'm breastfeeding and won't introduce a bottle for the first few weeks, so I don't know what he'll do for two weeks at home!  So I told him I'd rather him take a week now and then another when she's 6-8 weeks old ish.

    The plan is two weeks.

The plan was two weeks for DD, too, but I had a c/s and he took three.

  • DH teaches and coaches at a college so he's off most of the summer. He will go in to run practice for a couple hours a day and may work at a restaurant on the weekends for extra cash but he will be around a good bit of the time.

  • DH is taking 2 months off. I'm only taking 6 weeks as mine isn't paid time off and his is.

  • None I believe. He's a principal and works MTh during the summer but can kind of come and go KWIM...
  • DH is taking 2 weeks. I really only want him to take one, but we will see how it goes.

  • He will be taking 2 weeks. My friends have shared that 1 week has left them really wishing that DH was there to help for at least another week as the first week is just an acclimation period and flies by.

  • DH is taking 3 or so days as long as there is no complications then will take another few day a month or 2 later.

  • He gets 3 weeks and 3 days of paternity leave total, all paid. He's taking 2 weeks when the baby comes and the rest of the time later in July for a camping trip (so he doesn't have to take extra vacation days).

  • Mine's taking two but can work from home additional weeks if we need to. Honestly last time 2 weeks was plenty. But then I was as ready as I thought I was gonna be to handle it myself.
  • Mine will take a few days and then work part time from home for another week
  • My DH took only a week off this time and this time around he's taking 2 weeks

DH is going to take a week. That's all we can afford as he gets hourly pay and doesn't get paid while taking vacation time.
  • Two weeks but he works from home so he'll be here if I really need something.
  • imagenykkolhooks:
He's on an alternating schedule of 2, 12 hr shifts one week and 5, 12 hr shifts the next. Hopefully she'll come on his short week and he only takes two days off. Maybe I'm an overachiever, but I have the breasts... Babies are really sleepy their first two weeks so I don't really see the point if him taking so much time off work.

Huh. Guess my baby missed that memo.

DH took 4 weeks off with DS and I had wicked PPD so having him there saved both me and DS.

  • Mine will take a couple if days off vacation days then when my parents leave after 3 4 weeks, he will take his two weeks paid paternity leave. He will still have some vacation days left after.

  • Mine says he wants to take 6 weeks. He only works 10days a month so he'll be home quite a bit even after he goes back to work. Only thing is the days he works, he's on shift for 24hrs so I'll be home alone every 3rd day.

  • My husband is taking the standard paid two weeks off. We're moving at the end of the year when he starts a new job, however, so we're planning on him taking around 3 months off before his new contract starts so we can sort out visas and all the other international move details.

We own our own business, and my husband will be the only clinician for about a month before my replacement starts. I'm hoping to get him at home for three days, then we'll have family come help if we need it.

  • A couple of days until my mom gets here to help.  At the end of June, he'll be on summer vacation (teacher) so he'll be home all of July and August.  He's also taking a paid paternity leave from December through March of next year for when I go back to work.  We are only able to do this for this baby, and he's so excited to be a stay at hone dad for 2.5 months!

My H has a pretty flexible job and is able to work from home a lot. He is planning on working from home the first two weeks. He might end up using some PTO during those two weeks if he finds he isn't working as much as he thought. He will likely work from home a day or two a week the whole time I'm on maternity leave but we will see.

  • Last time we planned for him to take 2 weeks but he needed up going back half days after one. This time around he's banked up 4 or 5 weeks paid time off so he probably will take the same and then another week or so at the end of the summer before our big kid starts kindergarten.
  • DH is planning on taking two weeks off. He took that much time off with DS. I found I really needed his help the first week, by the second week, I did pretty good on my own. Two weeks was a good enough time to not feel overwhelmed caring for a newborn on my own.

  • The way it worked out for us is that DH's job ended on Friday. His new job starts July 8. So, he's home with me and the baby when he comes until then.

  • DH took 3 weeks off with our first. That was about right and I was cleared to drive again at that point.

This time around DH will be of on summer break since he works the school district calendar. He should be home for about the first 8 weeks of my leave. Hopefully he and DS can stick to their regular schedule a bit and get out of the house as much as they both need. Then we should have some time for all four of us to do some activities and get out of town once in awhile.

  • Two to three weeks. I'm looking forward to all of us spending family time together. He has lots of PTO saved up so he's able to do it without us suffering financially.

DH isn't taking any time off. He's new at his job and won't have any paid leave until nex year. He'll miss work if I'm in labor but that's about it.

  • He is taking off two but we are kinda going to see how that goes. He is an IT Manager at a very large company, so if things seem to be going alright after a week, he will go back then. And I almost guarantee he will be taking calls and emails and doing work related stuff at home- even during the first week.

Dh took 3 weeks for dd and will do 2 weeks this time. I feel I need him more this time to help with dd1. To the people who don't see the need for help. My labor went easy with dd I felt great was up and running in three weeks, however, I did to much at first and bleeding stopped after like 4 days and came back cause I wasn't resting enough. Also, it's nice for dh to have that bonding time and worry about nothing but his family IMHO. But to each his own.

  • He's taking ten days immediately following birth and ten days towards the middle and end of June when his parents are here. If the two sets of leave overlap, he'll take less than twenty days total.

If his parents weren't going to be here, he'd only take the initial ten days. He prefers to have the highest leave balance possible so he always has time available for family emergencies and has time to use just before retirement.

  • My husband is taking 5 days off, that is all they give him for paternity.  I am fine with that.

  • For the first one DH took off a week.  This one DH is planning on taking 1-2 weeks depending on how the little man does.  If he is sleeping well right out of the gate, I'll push him back to work after a week and then get him to take some long weekends later in my time off so that we can do some zoo outings, etc as a family rather than burning most of his vacation time.

He's taking a week paid vacation time after the baby comes, then another week in September.  I'm going back to work for the first week of the school year (not sure if I'll be able to get in over the summer and I want to have time to set up the library and get my plans together) and he's taking that week off as paid vacation time.  He can take up to 12 weeks unpaid family leave but we can't afford that.
  • AchaeAchae member
Mine is taking 4 weeks, but every other guy I've known has only taken a week. Mine is doing half vacation half unpaid with fmla. I know for many families it is a financial thing :
