Thoughts on ADD/ADHD & diet?

DS is not yet 4 and so not diagnosed with ADD but was seen by a psychiatrist last year for anxiety type behaviors & she suggested that it might be a diagnosis down the road for him...lately he's been having a lot more trouble sitting still & listening at school, acting out a bit and also we've been struggling w/ his behaviors at home.  I know that a lot of people believe there are major links between ADD/ADHD and diet but there is so much out there to look at, I'm not sure what to think.

I thought maybe it couldn't hurt to try to eliminate particular foods for maybe a 2 week period one at a time and see if his teachers report different behavior and we notice different behaviors at home? From what little I've read it looks like dairy, dyes/preservatives, sugar, chocolate (caffeine)...?

While I try to cook healthfully, I admittedly have begun to rely more on processed things for quick breakfasts and easier dinners more than I used to, as I now have a much longer commute to & from work, our new daycare doesn't provide breakfast so I have to get them to eat quickly before getting out the door, and we get home so late b/c of my commute I don't have much time to prepare things from scratch many nights. Plus he is relatively picky when it comes to vegetables though he is good w/ meat, fruits and some grain products (though not generally a big fan and even eats all the cheese & toppings off his pizza and won't eat the dough unless we tell him no more until he has eaten some of it...eats the insides out of sandwiches too).

But if these changes will really potentially help, I want to try. Thoughts?

  • We took all the dyes out of Trevor's diet about a year ago. I'm not sure if it made a real difference, but he does eat much healthier.

  • Thanks all I will look into it more. Can't hurt for all of us to eat healthier... Re the caffeine I wasn't focusing on it just included it in the list of things I had seen... I actually thought it was odd bc through exploring this we have realized that mh likely has add to some extent and has been unknowingly self medicatwith coffees for years now he drinks quite a bbit.  Sorry for all the typos on mobile and can't edit...
