Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did your LO start sleeping longer at night?

My DS is almost 6 weeks and he basically wakes up every 1.5 hours to eat around the clock.  He will take a slightly longer nap in the afternoon, but that's pretty much it.  I know every baby is different, but I'd love to hear when your LOs started sleeping for longer stretches at night?  At this point I'd be happy with a 2.5 hour stretch...I need to hear about the light at the end of the tunnel!

Re: When did your LO start sleeping longer at night?

  • Around 6 weeks is when my 7 week old started sleeping between 2 and 6 hour stretches. Good luck!  I totally understand the needing light at the end of the tunnel!!!

  • Have you tried offering more in the evening when he eats every hour and a half (sorry not sure if you are BF or FF)? LO eats (BM) at 5, 6:30, 8:00, and a few oz at 9:00. Down at 9:00, 4 oz at 3:30 and back out til 7. This has been pretty typical for 4 or 5 weeks now. Hoping LO starts sleeping more for you! :)

I'm not much help, DS was sleeping 3 hours at a time since birth. I second the cluster feeding. We started doing that when DS was around 4 weeks, when he started becoming interested in taking more. That helped him sleep 4-5 hours at a time and now he's sleeping 6 1/2-7 hours a night and will be 11 weeks tomorrow.

DS is 3 weeks today and he'll sleep in about 4 hour stretches at night. It's probably temporary but I'm enjoying it while I can.

Our LO is 9 weeks, and she has a horrible time sleeping. We follow a bedtime routine that finishes at around 9 (depending on her obviously). Sometimes is takes and she falls asleep. She'll wake-up to feed around 2, then back to sleep until about 5-7am. If it doesn't take she'll stay awake until 2am, then maybe she'll fall asleep until about 5. Then she'll sleep most of the day away. We're still working on it, but it is very challenging.
  • Last 2 nights we started getting 7 hour stretches. I make sure we cluster feed before bedtime it seems to help.

So, those of you who cluster feed, do you just offer the breast even if there are no hunger cues?

Mine fusses to nurse all evening. She definitely demands to be fed. She's pretty much slept a 4 hour stretch at night since she came home from the hospital. But we bedshare, and she's always slept better next to me. She also nurses constantly all day long now.

DS started sleeping 3-4 hours at a time around 6 to 8 weeks, but it wasn't consistent. He didn't start STTN (5+ hours) until 4 months exactly.

  • My daughter was about a month old when she started sleeping through the night :)

  • I've tried cluster feeding and a bath before bedtime, but it's pretty much hit or miss. The best we've gotten out of DD is a 5.5 hour stretch at night. Last night went like this: I put her down at 9:30 pm, she was up at 11, nursed again, down at 11:30, up at 1, nursed again and down at 2, slept till 6 and didn't go back to sleep till almost 8:30. She is almost 7 weeks and I'm hoping things get better soon.

Those of you whose LO STTN, do they nap a lot during the day?

  • Every child IS different. You have to keep in mind that when babies are going thru growth spurt they do eat every 1-2 hrs and very fussy. Your is going thru 2nd major growth spurt (6week) since birth, Give it little time a few day and it will go back to better normal for a while till week 12.

One of best books to describe and help them go thru it is: The wonder weeks : how to stimulate your baby's mental development and help him turn his 10 predictable, great, fussy, phases into magical leaps forward / Hetty van de Rijt and Frans Plooij
