WDA12T?

I have a friend who is about halfway through her first pregnancy and at her doctors appt today, the nurse gave her a kick counter booklet. She told my friend that if the baby kicks any less than 10 times in a span of 2 hours to call the doctor immediately.

Seems a bit alarmist, especially for a FTM. Were any of you told this?

  • I think kick counts are a good thing, but I was told to just count once a day.. I don't think it is new advice or anything though.

Absolutely it's important to pay attention to your baby's movement and I know kick counting isn't a new thing. But this nurse said to keep track ALL day, EVERY day.

I think all day, every day seems excessive. I think I did my kick counts maybe twice a day regularly?  I don't see how you could get anything else done if you were constantly trying to track baby's movement. Like I said, it seems excessive.

I read about kick counting before the Dr ever told me about it. I was obsessing over it.

Then I was told I could count either once a day, or just when he seemed to kick less.

  • I was never told to count kicks but to just be vigilant about if I was feeling any less movement than usual. DS was a mover and shaker and soccer player so I rarely had to worry.

Maybe the nurse wasn't very clear or your friend didn't understand fully, but I can't imagine being told to count all day everyday.

I was pretty obsessive about movement since we had been through miscarriages, an ectopic pregnancy, and a late loss for medical reasons.  Plus DD would be really active for a couple days and then sort of rest the next day, and that would freak me out :)

This is what I wonder as well..

L12- So sorry for you losses, I'm sure you were very aware of your lo's movements.

  • I think it's probably just so she can visually see what's normal for her baby/at what time of day he/she is most active.

But, if she's halfway through, I can honestly say that I didn't feel G kick for the first time until 17 weeks and even then, he didn't really start going until close to 24 weeks. SO finally felt him at 30 weeks.

I never did kick counts, TBH. I just paid attention to what time of day he was up and what time of day he wasn't. If he was ever quiet during a time he was usually active, then I was concerned.
