My favorite carrier for the newborn stage was the Baby K'tan. I used it every single day until DS was four months old. My favorite carrier now is the Babyhawk Mei Tai. Neither of those are technically wraps but both of them have been well worth the money in our family.
I think a moby wrap is a great beginner wrap, because it is soft and stretchy, and very forgiving for a new wrapper. You can usually find them used for 20. If you are looking for a woven wrap, vatanai is a good beginner wrap, didymos waves. I really like bali breeze for the summer. I would ask on the AP board too.
Agree with the moby wrap for a baby! Only good until 15lbs, but really great for the little stage.
We wore mine in the moby wrap until he was around 20lbs. I love the moby for at home, but I much prefer the Babyhawk Mei-tai. You can use it from infancy (no insert), we started at 2 weeks.
