Madeleine or Madeline?

We've settled on a name--Madeleine/Madeline Grace (pronounced Mad-uh-lynn).  :)  What spelling do you like better?  (Poll wouldn't work for me...)  :(

    Yup. No question.

  • Madeline.. The other seems to be harder for people to spell, and looks like it would be pronounced differently.
  • I agree with the others.  Madeline is my vote.
  • Madeline unless you want it pronounced "mad-uh-LINE" like the other spelling.
  • Madeleine.  That's the spelling we went with and the -Lynn pronunciation is correct for it.  We have not had any spelling or pronunciation issues.

  • You're bound to have spelling and pronunciation issues with either one. Madeleine's correct pronunciation is indeed Mad-uh-lynn. Our girl name last pregnancy was Madeleine Grace. If we have a girl in the future, she will be Madeleine Grace. I might have gone for the Madeline spelling were it not for the fact that she would be named after my favorite aunt.
  • This is our girl name and decision we're facing, too. I think we're leaning Madeline, but Madeleine seems more traditional. Isn't that the traditional French spelling? That's what I was told. Who knows.

  • Either can be pronounced Mad.uh.lynn but prefer Madeleine.

yep. Traditionally in France, Madeleine is used. It is pronounced Mad-uh-Lynn and Madeline is pronounced the same but is the American spelling. I love either or.

  • Personally I like the French "-eine" spelling, but the English Madeline is probably favored in the states.

Neither of those two are technically pronounced Mad-uh-lynn.

    Madeleine (my favourite): Mad-uh-LEN

    Madeline: Mad-uh-LINE

To get the pronunciation you like it would be Madelyn. But, I am in Canada and on the Quebec border, so they are more particular about these things. If you are set on these spellings, an anglophone tongue will be more likely to say Madeleine as Mad-uh-lynn. :)
