Coping with anxiety

Our DS has just started sepertation anxiety. He is fine when someone is in the room with him (dh, caretaker, me) but if we step out of the room for a second, oh boy! Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this and how long it lasted or had any advice in dealing with it. Right now I just announce I'm coming back and announce when I return. He has been such an easy going baby it has sort of come as a shock.

DD has started this as well, it's driving me batty! Well not so much the crying as people's reaction to it.  I stay at home with her during the day, and work a few night shifts during the week.  My in laws always comment that "she's a mommy's girl"  or "she doesn't get very much time with other people"  when she whines for me, as if it's bad we get to spend our days together.  Pretty sure separation anxiety is normal, but thanks for your concern MIL.
